Default Ashtray lid won't close

Is the flip-up lid to the ashtray in the dash always supposed to be open? Mine is always open when I open the larger door in front of it that exposes the ashtray and lighter. I took it out and can't really see how it is supposed to close.

The little door directly over the ashtray only closes when the main cover(door) is closed. Sounds like yours is working fine.

I believe that the smaller ashtray door inside is always supposed to be opened, because of a spring in the lid. It is supposed to be held closed by the larger outer lid. at least that is how mine is.

It MIGHT be that your car was owned by a smoker before. Put a piece of Niccorette gum in the ashtray and see if it closes by itself then get out of the car after turning on the headlights and see if the lights have a glazed over look!

P.S. No hate PMs please,,,joke intended on the situation, not the problem Flag Day

But seriously, that's the way they're designed. When you open the big door, the small door pops open with it.

Apparently that is just how it is then. I don't smoke and can't fathom the idea of anyone smoking in a Corvette anyway so I thought there could be another practical purpose for the ashtray.
