Default Steering Wheel Vibration Issue

I need your help in trouble shooting a problem I'm having with steering wheel vibration issue.

When I'm driving between 60-70 mph, the steering wheel shakes.

Oddly enough, sometimes it will fade, stop vibrating and not do it for awhile, and it will begin again.

I had a wheel alignment done at the dealership, new Goodyear run-flat tires, new rims (aftermarket from Bob and House of Wheels) Hunter Road Force hi-speed balance. What is the big mystery here, and what could possibly be the problem?

My first thought was tire balance.

You say you have new wheels. I had a friend buy new wheels and found the bolt holes were slightly off-center. They balanced ok since the machine uses the center hole - not the bolt holes. When on the car there was a slight vibration.

Years ago I had a set of tires that I could not get balanced on a Camaro. I found a shop that would balance them on the car. Rode smooth as glass after that. But you had to keep the tires in the exact position or the alignment was off.

good luck.

I had a similar problem when I bought new rims and tires for my truck. Had a bad vibration at 65 mph. Had the tire shop re-balance them, but the problem remained. Took it to the dealership and the service guy said it was a common problem with the adhesive type weights and aftermarket wheels. He said they'd do a "phase match" balance that would put the tire on the rim in the best orientation to cancel out the vibration...basically the heavy spot on the tire is put opposite the heavy spot on the rim. I don't know if it's or not, but it helped my situation.

Hopefully some tire junkies will chime in?

My car does something similiar from 75-85. Now, I took it and got an alignment and a balance and still have some (not quiet as much) at those speeds. I asked about it and was told that I need to get a "static" balance (I am pretty sure that is what it was), which mounts some weights on the lip (inside) area of the wheel. The stick on weights provide balance for one thing and the outter weight provides for another thing. He explained it to me, but there was so much being tossed around I caught bits and pieces of it, plus I was chancing my kid around the show room..

I may give it a shot.

Anyone out there think that is or not?

Micah

Sounds like a tire balance problem to me. If it's at highway speeds 60-70 mph and below or above, sounds right to me. Take it back to the dealer that installed them and have them rebalance them.

To static balance is done at rest, dynamic balance is when tire is done in motion. I like dynamic, some say static.
If a tire needs let's say 2 ounce of weight in a spot, the best way is to split the weight putting 1 ounce on the inside lip area and 1 ounce on the outside lip area. Us vette people don't like to see this on our outside rim area so it is all put in one spot on the inside middle or way inside. Some people think it makes a difference some don't.
A bad tire can make a shake. I put brand new tires on a car a few years ago and could not drive the car. Went back and shop found a bad tire.
