Default It's in the shop manual

It is about 2.5 turns past contact !
For a '99, Volume 2 of 3 of GM Shop Manual, Page 6-10. 22 Lb ft is to specification. Shade tree mechanic 1/2 to 1 (or 2 1/2) turn past hand tight probably doesn't work on an LSx engine. If filter is not to spec, you may see a slight drop in oil pressure (You now have a weak point in a sealed system) and possibly some leakage at the filter (I had some oil around the filter and pan). I used the hand tight and 1/2 - 1 turn method for my first oil change (have done it for decades on other cars) and started losing oil with no visible leaks and got the 'Low Oil Alert' twice. Tought it was the PCV/intake issue. Drove me nuts. Finally got my manuals and came across the filter torque spec while reading the engine torque specs. Surprised me. Changed oil, torqued filter to spec (used a 3/8" torque wrench and a proper filter cup) and haven't had issue since (5,000 miles). Oil pressure is now normally on the north side of 40 (Was in the high 30's before I torqued the filter, I believe I had some pressure leakage) and I have minimal oil loss (less than 1 qt in 5,000 miles).

Do what you want, but torque specs are engineered data. I'd find out what it is for your year and torque the filter to specification. Just my experience, always torque fittings, nuts, bolts, etc. on an autombile to spec. There's an engineered specification for that torque value. Guessing how tight things should be and doing it by feel isn't too smart on a car as expensive as a C5 (or any car IMHO).

You can get both the relatively new AMSOIL Ea Oil Filter and WIX Filters from the AMSOIL link to the left (or in my sig under ordering info).

Applicable C5 part numbers:
EA Oil Filter: EAO32
Wix Oil Filter: 51042

I use K&N because of quality, and also I don't have to use a cap wrench with it, since it has a built-in wrench nut. If they're out at the auto parts store, I use Mobil 1. Never will buy a Fram filter again (except for my daughter's Mustang, maybe )

Interesting info on the torque. I cracked a filter in my youth, turning it too far with a wrench. But if the spec is 22....the info above seems convincing. Anyone know the torque specifications for an 2002 (Z06, but that probably doesn't matter)?
