Default Overheating Question...

In the owners manual of my 02 Z, it talks about being able to drive 50 miles home if your engine overheats with "Reduced Power". It came to light a few days ago when my thermostat took a dump and decided to boil some water before I could get it shut down. I never got hot enough to kick on the reduced power, but out of curiosity, will an LS6 actually survive getting cooked for 50 miles???? I know these engines are solid, especially in stock form, but that is VERY impressive if true.

This feature .... called "Engine Overtemp Protection" was first developed by GM and put on the Cadillac Northstar engine back in the 1990's. One of the car magazines (I forget which one) decided to "test" this feature as they didn't believe it would work. If I remember correctly they drained ALL of the coolant from the car, then drove over 500 miles with the "REDUCED ENGINE POWER" warning on. It really does work.

A few months ago, I asked a Caddy service mgr about that feature on he early Northstars. He told me they did not work (at least when they first came out). I did not ask him about later models.

Sorry this info does not help you.
