Default Engine Shuts Down When Put in Gear. HELP

My son has had his FRC in a shop for a couple of weeks for new Tigershark Front and Rear End.

The work is done but the shop says they can start the car and in runs OK but when they put it in gear it shuts down.

Any suggestions appreciated.

That car obviously has had the useless yet damaging GM recall for the column lock and they reprogrammed the computer to shut down the fuel supply if the computer thinks the column is locked. The previous poster was right about charging the battery as these cars have parasitic draw on the battery all the time and if the car has not been driven in two weeks the battery is almost discharged.
For anyone out there who has never had the recall done, DON'T! It will only cause problems like the OP is having. Buy a CLB from Corvettes of Houston and install it yourself in a few minutes and your locking steering column will be a thing of the past.
Good luck with solving the problem!

Hold down both the lock & unlock buttons on the fob until the horn honks once. You should be fine after that.

I can be there Sunday to take a look at it if you would like. I'm planning to be there Tuesday anyway, so I'll just come up a couple days early.

If I had seen this earlier today I would already be there.

I know it sounds like excuses but tomorrow morning I have to meet with the publisher of GM High Tech Performance magazine and Saturday I have a date....with a GIRL (woohoo!!) to go for a drive ( ), not a cruise because going slow is BOOOORRRIING Do you think the first date is too early to propose?

Seriously. I'll be happy to do what I can Sunday. PM me and I will give you my cell number.

I was just trying to add a moment of levity in an otherwise frustrating situation.

"I" thought it was funny. (When you watch someone that has just bought a new motorcycle start it and kill it 4-5 times before they start looking for other problems, it is all you can do to keep a straight face. They honestly have NO IDEA what the problem is. I have done it too, so I have earned my laugh. If they can't figure it out, I do go out and clue them in. Most laugh harder than I did.)

Can you explain how that procedure overrides the fuel cutoff program in the computer?

If it is not the column lock when the battery died it set the security circuit so as soon as it registers the car moving it shuts down. If you reset the fob (as long as the battery is charged) and then unlock the car it should disable the security set.

"Hold down both the lock & unlock buttons on the fob until the horn honks once. You should be fine after that." Worked for me! Every time I put it in gear and rolled a few feet it died. Charged the battery and did this and I was off to the races!

DIC reads "Service Column Lock". The shop left the key in the ignition for the 3 weeks it was being worked on.

2000 FRC had the factory recalls completed and only had the "pull key and wait 10 sec." thing a couple of times.

Disconnected battery and charged overnight. We'll see if it works out later today. Also cleaned the key.

Thanks all for your suggestions.

It's at the Dealership. The Tech showed us on his computer that the BCM think the Key is out when it is in.
He said he thought it was a faulty ingnition switch and is changing it out. (the resistance shows it was reading the key and the car starts and runs until you try to move it. DIC reads "Service Column Lock"

It did have both recalls done a couple of years ago.

My guess is short in the K Harness. But we'll let the Tech do his thing until he figures it out.

PS CLB ordered.

Well the Dealer called my son and said it was fixed and ready to pick up.

It will be interesting to see what he did to fix it.

I'll post the details when we find out later.

The Vettes fixed. The service guy said it was the ignition switch that was bad. Never heard of that causing "Service Column Lock" codes. But it's fixed and the Body Shop paid for it. (they said it was their fault for leaving the key in the ignition while it was in the shop).

I'm not a big fan of body kits on Vettes. That said the Tigershark Front and Rear facias on his FRC look AWESOME

He post some pics tonight. (Longrodlx)

Default Update

7/062007
The tech at the dealer said the Key Switch was bad. He showed us on his computer that it was indicating the key was OUT when it was in. Changed out the switch and he picked it up Friday. Everything is fine...Well at least it was/

Yesterday afternoon he puts the key in the switch and it won't turn. Cleaned the key, disconnected battery all the regular crap no good.

The dealer had the car towed back this morning to re-fix it.

7/07/2007
Now the dealer can get the key to turn but nothing happens. No DIC no nothing. The tech says he's baffled. Duh.. maybe it has something to do with the new switch you put in?

Service manager says they are going to the GM tech line on Monday and maybe a new computer.

Today

Duh.. maybe it has something to do with the new switch you put in?
Dealer found one of the pins in the NEW switch had dropped. (That's why it would not turn) And when he fixed that and still had no power found out that when the pin dropped it somehow shorted out the resistor in the key so it would not recognize the key. (put it in security mode)

He cut a new key and everything is fixed.. finally.

Good thing is He covered to towing costs and the repairs at NO charge and really tried hard to make things right in the customer service dept. Findley Chevrolet in Las Vegas.
