Default what's in a name...

Corvette: A small ,maneuverable, lightly armed warship; smaller than a frigate and larger than a coastal patrol craft, usually with a single deck gun. The first refernece to a corvette was in the 1670's with the French Navy.

So corvettes have been with us from the 17th century to the present time. To this day they are on land and on sea.

After rejecting almost 300 proposed names, Chevy's assistant advertizing manager Myron Scott, in 1952, found a name that seemed to strike the right cord. A small, agile warship that implied speed, strenght and maneuverability. It was perfectly suited to the powerful
and nimble compact sports car soon to be unleashed.

I guess it is true that all things came from the sea.

I wonder what some of the names were that were also being considered.

Being an old Navy man myself, I kind of like the name. Wouldn't change a thing!

It has become an American icon, like Coca-Cola, the statue of liberty, baseball, the American bald eagle, and so many other things that we associate with being all-American.

Take pride in your car and your country this Fourth of July.

Fly Old Glory with pride!

Actually "Corvair" was considered but thankfully not used until later on another car.

I'm glad they didn't design a rudder on the new Corvette-RP
