I have a automatic 1998 C-5 Corvette that is now getting its 8th transmission. The replacements have taken place at 37,000, 88,000, 114,000, 190,000, 200,000, 260,000, and currently 304,000 miles. The first three times the reverse went out, then the second and third gears went out. The current problem seems to be from a crack in the drum and the third gear went out according to the transmission shop. No one, including car dealers, can say why I continue to have the transmission problems. The car is not driven rough, and I do not want to sell it; however, I do not want to keep having to replace the transmission. I would appreciate any suggestions from other Corvette owners who might have expereniced this same problem.
I have 67k on my 98 auto, I brake/torque/smoke the tires when the urge hits me. I cannot believe you put that many in your car!!! Mine is still going strong, I set mine at 75% firmness with programmer. I have no idea what to tell you. Call Rodney at RPM transmissions. Good Luck
My car still has the original trans no work done to it and chirps second gear at 232,xxx miles.
Did anyone ever flow check your trans cooler? Are any of the cooler lines restricted? Do you monitor the trans temp while driveing? A cracked or broken part would be a defect or stress, a burned clutch would indicate running hot or hard.
Is there a place that sells a reman with a unlimited mileage warranty? I thought the GM SRTA's had a good warranty.
A new tranny from GM should have a 3year/100k mile warranty so maybe that'd help save you some money. Dont know why your having so many problems maybe let the guys at RPM or something look it over
This may sound weird but I'd love to see a screenie of your odometer as well just to save as proof to others that Vettes are as a reliable car as any Volvo
Cool! Finally someone with more miles than me. Sorry to hear about your tranny woes. I finally gave up and replaced my MM6 last year at extreme cost on my '99. I don't remember the number of miles at the time when I replaced it but it was probably around 275,000. It was on its 3rd major failure when I gave up. Somehow, I was the unlucky person who managed to get Borg Warner MM6 instead of the Tremec it was supposed to have. Its now got a Tremec in it. I'm now at 292,700 I'll post a pick of the odometer when I hit 300,000.
Hey Thomas L., your profile doesn't say where you are as I'm just curious if you are out here in S. Calif.? I'm wanting to know what things have happened to yours over the miles/years vs mine therefore lots of people wanting to know what to expect from their cars. For example, something that just happened to mine the other day, the radiator fans stopped working. Turns out it was ground pack G102 on the right frame rail. When I went to remove and clean it, the ground post itself, simple fell off to the ground. It can't be replaced. I ran a new ground wire to the frame for the ground pack and all is well again. I have no idea what caused this post to drop away.
