For what reason was it suggested you change to a 180? Changing the thermo alone won't make it run any cooler. It'll just open sooner, then the air flow through the radiator will determine the running temp. If it's overheating in traffic, you can program the fans to come on earlier along with the thermo and get some advantage. Making sure you have good air flow through the radiator and a/c condensor will do more good than anything for cooling. Again, why was it suggested to you?

When I changed my thermo to a 160 and I had a tune, I got the tuner to change my fans, my temp has never gone over 187. If you get a cooler thermo stat you have to retune the fans. Good Luck!

172* Thermostat here but as stated above you need the fans to come on earlier in order for it to be effective at all!
