Sorry I didn't take pics of this but my - like a lot of people - had a broken shift boot ring on my M6 car. I run a C6 shifter. It was broken in about 3 pieces and I have a Redline boot on the car.
You can't just get the ring from a dealer you have to buy the whole boot.
I went to Lowes/Home Depot and got a snap connector for the large plastic corregated drainage pipe. It's smooth on the outside and about 4 inches long. The first thing I did was slit it up the side so I could increase the diameter to fit the hole in the center console. I then cut it lenght-wise to the same width as the stock ring. I cut another piece to increase the diameter. I joined the pieces with small sheet metal screws about 1 inch from what will be the top of the ring. These help keep the ring down. I then attached the Redline boot with sheet metal screws every couple of inches around the outside of the ring - also about an inch down.
I now have a shift boot that fits tight inside the console and the ring is flush.

Hey, you can't come up with a great $ saving DIY fix like this and not show us pics When a neighbor or friend needs your help doing this great sounding mod, don't forget the PICS! Thanks
I didn't take pics because I really didn't know how well it was going to turn out. TA8088 - local to me here - also needs the fix. Maybe we can do his and get some pics up. I'll PM him.
I went to Home Depot at lunch today and I'm not sure I found the right parts. Outside near the black corrugated tubing (that you'd use for something like underground drainage in a flowerbed or from gutters on your house?), there are 4" plastic couplers. They are smooth and round on the outside. Is this what you used? And I don't understand how you made it the oval shape? You cut it in half, but what pieces did you use to elongate the circle into an oval? Also, how did it "snap" into the console since it is smooth? If there's any way you could take pics of it out of the car and in the car, we'd appreciate it!! I'm about to have to buy an OEM boot just to get a new ring!

Mine was broken into two pieces when I bought the car. I took it out and sat it on the workbench. I cut a piece of a wide cable tie or tie wrap and used JB weld to hold the piece of tie wrap in place. I let it dry, turned it over and did the same to the other side. It has held up for 16 months now.
That JB weld is great stuff. I have also used it to repair my pool cleaning robot and it has held up well for over a year.
