My guess is you won't find too many used LS6's at a decent price. GM doesn't usually give you a good price on a new engine so it might be the same to buy the LS6 or LS3 from them--I would get the LS3 is available. The LS6 would preserve the original look so that the next owner would not ask about it if you didn't tell him.
The L92 truck engine (aluminum block, 6.2 liter, 403 HP) costs about the same as a LS6 or LS2 in 'crate' form. However, it would require the $600 L76 intake (complete with injectors and 90mm TB--actually a bargain!) to fit in a C5, not to mention the conversion for TB wiring and 58 tooth reluctor (still, not a big deal). BUT with the addition of a larger cam and springs, it would be capable of much more power than a similarly modified LS6 or LS2.
With a very streetable cam and headers you are looking at an easy 550 HP!
The new 440 HP LS3 is essentially this combo with a 'Corvette specific' camshaft, and maybe a tiny bit more compression. I don't know when the LS3 will be available as a GMPP offering, or how much it will cost (it would also need wiring mods for the same TB and reluctor as above).
He could possibly rebuild the LS6 for half the cost of a crate motor, and make 500 HP with the right parts.

Unless he can get the dealer to pony up a huge discount, I think he's better off, and maybe cheaper, to take it to a competent Corvette mechanic to do the work. Most dealers are far from competent when repairing Corvettes.
The LS6 seems to be putting out more power stock Vs stock over the LS2. I think there are more mods available for the LS6 also. So I would probably go with the LS6 on this one.

Dump that Ls6 and have that GM rep drop him off a C5R motor from the "parts bin"
