Default extended warranty

hey ya'll, I'm a newb but I am really gun shy after getting my vette a few weeks ago then reading about everyone's troubles with service lights, column lock-ups, ECBM issues etc and was wondering if an extended warranty would be worth it, I went to the local chevy dealership and my 02 with 23,800 miles would cost like $4000 for the 48month/48K with a $100 deductible on the GMPP. I think that's a lil steep and was wondering if any of ya'll had another type of extended warranty and what your experiences were so far with those. I would be willing to spend $2000 but the GMPP just sounds really expensive.

Run a search on Dennis Fitchner for a GMPP and decide for yourself. Can't go wrong ... 'nuff said

It's my understanding that to qualify for GMPP your car still has to be in its original 3 year/36,000 mile factory warranty. Your '02 would not be that category. As others have said, contact Dennis Fitchner -- he will give you the straight scoop. Good luck!

Mulkey2

I will chime in here

1.) I can not sell you a GMPP for your 2002-as stated I can only sell you a GMPP if under the factory 36-36.
2.) They are raping you on price-enough said
3.) They can not sell you a GMPP unless you bought the car from them and even then you have to purchase a GMPP on the day of purchase on a used car.

I just had this discussion with the head person of GMPP and he has taken warranty privileges away from over 100 dealers in the last year for this very thing, selling a GMPP to someone who just walks in off the street without the proper inspection, etc and something is wrong with their car.

My opinion of aftermarket warranties-STAY AWAY FROM THEM.

Mulkey2, let me throw my $0.02 worth in here. I also purchased an 2002 a little over a year ago. I hadn't purchased a used (sorry previously owned) car for over 20 years. Always bought new. I also got hooked up with the forum and started seeing posts from folks with all kinds of issues. Bad EBCM's Engine problems, headlight problems, etc.

Throw in the fact that mine had a bad EBCM and the headlight problem when I purchased it. The dealer was going to fix them in the price, but I got them to reduce the price of the car and I ended up fixing myself with better parts and for less than they discounted.

So what did I do when I started seeing all the post on the forum from folks with problems? I went out and purchased a $2,500 aftermarket warranty from AAA. One year later and I've not had another problem (knock on wood ). What I have had is piece of mind that if I do have problems I have a warranty that will cover most of the costs.

The down side is, if you modify your car from stock you run the risk of not being covered. Some companies will cancel your warranty if you modify it from stock, so you don't do mod's that you would like to do.

Hind sight is 20/20, but if I had it to do all over again I wouldn't have spent the money on the warranty and used the money to put a CAM & headers on the car. My hind sight is also fueled by the fact that I've not had any issues to date. (knock on wood ).

Maybe we should start a thread for folks who haven't had any problems since the bought their previously owned Vette.

Good luck what ever way you go and congratulations on your Vette!

I've seen this same dooms day stuff on other auto forums! You only hear the bad things that go wrong on a very small percentage of the cars, most are trouble free. I just bought an 98 with 24K on it in perfect condition and I almost was influance not buy because of reading this forum until I figured most cars will be trouble free for the most part,

Hey Grandpa,
that's what I was worried about, most of the issues I've seen are with column lock, ECBM or something that while a pain in the **** can be replaced without much trouble, I've got a CL bypass and like you said I am modifying the car with an intake and exhaust for now and that's it.

03Spiral- do you know if these mods would void your warrantydirect policy? Have you had good dealings with them so far, I know they require an inspection, how did that go?

thanks for the input guys, I would be ok with paying some money for an extended warranty just for peace of mind but anything over $2K seems kinda silly as the parts I've seen people have problems with can be fixed for less (luckily I have friends that can work on cars!)

As of yet I haven't used it. Hope I don't have to. Inspection was easy, but my car had no mods on it other then Corsa Cat Back and the inspector had no problems with it. If you go on line and request a quote, someone will contact yopu and they are great to work with. It doesn't hurt to inquire.

Default warranty info

Just bought an after market warranty last week from local Chevrolet dealer. It's from the Chrysler corporation, 5 year - 50,000 additional miles, $200 deductible, $2310, transferrable for life of warranty. They said that was $100 over their cost. It's expensive and I considered Fitchner's advice to bank the money and pay as you go, however these cars are pricey to fix and there are few choices for waranties for older cars. Warranty direct wanted over $2000 for a 2 year extended waranty!! My C5 is a 2000 with 53,000 miles. Had an extended warranty until now and it paid for itself. Last repair was to fix the "rocking seat" problem. Dealership replaced the entire seat bottom...$1200 repair. Recent inspection shows rear seals may need replacement...very $$$ to fix...also the dreaded gas guage issue raised it's ugly head in Arizona last winter...Techron fix for now. It's been a great car but they wear out eventually. I am not an insurance freak, just want to be protected.
