Default Height to install BSM's?

Hi guys,

A local friend of mine just bought an 03 Vert and wishes for me to install the Body Side Moldings on his ride. I don't mind doing it, but don't know the height measurements to install them from.

If someone has some measurements available, I'd appreciate it

Thanks,
Josh

No exact measurements but from the photos you can see they start in the center of the fender opening and rise about 2 inches at the rear end of the molding. Problem with measurements is that there is no perfect point to measure from, no sharp edges. You can't measure from the ground since each car may sit just a little differently.

Good Luck

That may work, I can probably get it pretty close from the photos. If you were to measure it, it's probably easiest to get a measurement from the bottom of the door.

Thanks!

This should do it.
(From the GM Service Manual)

Top of fender to the top of molding is 335mm (13.2 in).
Bottom of key-hole opening to top of molding is 195mm (7.8 in).
Front edge of molding is positioned 5mm (0.20 in) rearward of the front edge of the door

To each their own...for me, it really depends on the color. Some look better with, and some better without. But, if you're not in the habit of parking carefully, all will look better with the BSM's and w/o chips in the paint from other people's doors...that is why they were designed, after all.

Default Is he sure about this?

Amazingly, a recent poll here on CF found that about 50% of respondents approve of BSM. Is your customer aware of the fact that a great many true Corvette enthusiasts find BSM to be inconsistent with the C5's classic lines. What would Zora Duntov have said about them. Dick Guldstrand is still around, let's ask him about questionable looking dead weight carried high! Hey, I'ts his ride and God bless him whatever he decides. If he wonders if some people snicker when they see BSM; ABSOLUTELY!

I remember the poll. I like mine, but if I didn't have them I wouldn't complain either. Sure, it is a matter of taste, take me for insistance, I HATE POPUP HEADLIGHTS, so I guess I am never going to be a true CORVETTE lover...NOT!

Mine is a DD, so they are an absolute necessity. Like today, I had to park in a space that would be small even for a Civic. Luckily, I'm not very wide or i wouldn't have been able to get out of the car.

Moral of the story for me really is get to work earlier and get the good parking spots! However, I still like my BSMs they look cool to me.

Who cares what others think? Certainly not me. I don't know anyone who purchased their Corvette to please others. The original poster asked for technical assistance on installation, not personal opinions on corvette styling. I guess there will always be people who are simply unable to prevent themselves from expressing unsolicited negative opinions.

The original question was at what height, not should he do it (thank God). That horse has been beaten so badly, the stick is a toothpick now.

I also added mine on. I found that a used set of BSMs does not keep the contour of the body well. So now I have them off, Again.
