There are some notches on the inside of the surround, IIRC. Put a flat blade screwdriver in the notches and pry out. There are barbed tabs on the back of the surround that snap into slots. When you are finished, snap it back on.

See you DO learn something everyday. The one I saw on my buddies 02 vert was screwed on. Think it was aftermarket maybe? Or was there a change from 01 to 02?

Look closely at the photo. You'll see two "slots" on each side. That is where you'l pry (lightly) to get the old one off.
I think you'll have trouble getting a custome surround that fills in properly. I tried it with an NCM surround and it looked
BTW, the reason the lights look weird is because the left is one of Richards' (C5Vette) tower LEDs and the right is the stock bulb. Both in Richards' Smoked Adjure housing.
