Default remote car starters - opinions?

I met a C5 guy the other day who has a Viper alarm system that comes with a remote starter - he can start his car from his key fob - way cool IMHO.

I went to my local car alarm company - they want $650 for parts and labor and the guy says I have to switch out my entire alarm system.

I checked eBay and found remote starters going for less than $100 but I'm sure there's a catch.

I'd like to add a remote starter without switching out the perfectly good alarm system I have now. I have an A4 2004 btw.

Any thoughts????? Recommendations????

well i have an ungo system that came with the car and i am very happy with it. I am able to start the car with my remote, set the climate of the car, open the trunk, and a bunch of other features that i dont really use. The best thing that i like about this system is that if my car alarm starts to go off, not only will my car alarm ring, but also my key fob will also beep " up to one mile away"

Ungo huh? Any idea how much it cost. I know it came with the car but maybe you know.

They vary, it depends what you're looking for. I had an auto-start without alarm installed on my Suburban, and the factory alarm still works just fine. It cost me a total of $150, including installation.. The more expensive setups do more, but if you just want to be able to start your car, then the $100 items you see on eBay should get the job done.

I have a factory remote system in my 06 Impala. I'm very impressed with it as it determines the temperature and puts on either the ac or heater automatically. Nice getting into a warm car in January. We had a system put into my wife's truck a few years back (from GM) and I wouldn't give you a nickel for it.

I had the remote start in my 84 about 10 years ago. I was in Jersey back then and it was wonderful getting into a warm car every morning in winter. In califonia though it would be as useful as **** on a bull I think. Unless you just want to scare people like I did when I moved to california. Fun times then...

I paid $670 for my alarm system with automatic starter.

I didn't really have much of a choice because I don't drive the car in the winter time, but it's fun showing it off at night.

We have it on our Vette and had it on a few previous vehicles, I love it. Its nice to be able to warm up your car so by the time you get to it you dont have to sit there and wait. We paid $450 installed for ours and it has bunch of features including paging.

I've had the Python since the beginning of the year...

...no conflicts with the OEM system.... and the newer ones work up to about a mile away (gives you status that far too).

You're gonna pay... the systems aren't cheap... even at cost, it's up there, sorry.

Right now, I especially like it because the car interior cools off by the time I get in
