Since my 07 Z06 sits from time to time I put a battery tender on it. The tender got real hot and never went off the red light. I've used it many times before on my older Vette's and never had a problem. Is there something I'm missing on using it on the new car. How long can a new one sit before the battery starts dying.
Thanks in advace for any help.
How long did you let it charge? Sometimes, one of mine might take overnight to completely charge and go green. The chargers do get warm, that's normal.
It's possible that the battery is beyond help. It's also possible that the BATTERY TENDER is defective. The newer versions of the BATTERY TENDER have a great warranty. Contact DELTRAN CORP and inquire. I've had one of my BATTERY TENDER PLUS models for over 10 years and it's still going strong, but now out of warranty. The newer version is now attached to my C5/Z16.
Are you aware there is a C6/Z06 specific forum?

The tender was on overnight and half of the previous day. Took it off put it back on my 67 and now it's working fine and cooled off. The Z06 is only 2 months old but has been sitting for almost 3 weeks. Seems all ok just thought I would trickle charge it to prevent any problems. Maybe I should just drive it more and forget trying to keep it charged. Just everytime I go to take it out it's pouring rain here in So. Florida.
That's longer than it should have taken, especially since it's working fine on the other car. The new cars do have lots of electronics though and they will quickly drain the strongest of batteries.
Are you using the alligator clips or the ring terminals permanently attached to your Z06 battery? I think the instructions on mine said something about incorrectly or not completely connnecting the leads could cause a non charging situation. Was the red LED on solid or flashing? I'd try it again and if it happens again, contact DELTRAN, the manufacturer of BATTERY TENDER. I'd bet they'll have an answer or replacement.
I know what you mean about the weather...in AZ, we're now moving into monsoon season. Every day the clouds move in, bringing the high humidity and high temperatures. I don't feel like taking my car out with the potential for heavy rain on oil slick roads and crazy drivers.
Was using alligator clips, maybe that was the problem. I think it's just too much for the charger to handle, I tried another one and the same thing happened, hot to handle and solid red light. Put the other back on my Cobra, it cooled down and now is working fine. Enjoy your monsoon weather and just like here it'll soon be over and nice driving days will be ahead.
I have about 6 battery tenders on various cars and mc's and I have experienced a similar condition before. When I hook it up to my 300ZX and lock the car, that activates the alarm system (which shouldn't really draw much current?) but it seemed to stay red for a long while. When I don't lock the car, the same charger flips over to green after a short time. The fact that it indicated red did not seem to overcharge the battery but it was differrent than all other units. The Z06 has a lot going on when locked. Just a thought.

Mine took more than 20 hours to turn green...Keep in mind that was on a new Optima battery lol...
Staying red didn't bother me, it was the plug unit getting really hot that did it. Happened with 2 different brand chargers. Must be something constantly running that takes a lot of current.
Looks like I hit the wrong btton, I should be in C6 Z06....Is there a way to send this there or should I just re post it ???
Sorry guy's, It's been a crazy morning, my youngest daughter had her first child this morning and I was there till 4 AM in the hospital. Running on no sleep. DUH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations Grampa! Send a message to one of the moderators and they'll move this for you if needed.
If your BATTERY TENDER worked on the other cars w/o issue, I'd bet you have a battery in your Z06 that should be checked out by the dealer.
So, do you guys leave them on when you are gone? Would you leave one on while out of town or is this a fire hazard?
The electronics of a BATTERY TENDER PLUS or BATTERY TENDER JR. is completely safe to leave attached indefinitely. The leads on mine are permanently attached to the OPTIMA with a male/female quick disconnect. Some prefer to use just the alligator clips, some prefer to use a cigarette lighter adapter. The charger will get warm but should never get hot enough to cause combustion.
Just don't forget to disconnect when you take the car out for a drive.

Remember that you are going from 110 volts a/c to 12 v dc. Big reduction will cause heat. Try touching a light bulb; that will teach you!!
