Default Bringing a U.S. car into Canada

I know some of you have bought a vette in the U.S. and brought it into Canada. Were there any requirements to modify the car in any way in order to pass provincial inspections? I am in Alberta.
Thanks!!

You have the get the recall clearance letter, and I think the 03+ need some type of modification - but I cant check out the webpage with the computer I'm on. You'll have to contact the at the Registry of Imported Vehicles, and the list of vehicles is here:

http://www.riv.ca/english/html/us_ve...ssibility.html

however, if your buying a car in the US from a chevy dealership, make sure that you can bring the car back! I was going to buy a new Hummer and, although both GM Canada and Hummer USA said there was not problem in bringing the vehicle across, 2 hummer dealerships said NO to selling the cars to Canadians if they were going to bring the car across to Canada. Also Les Stanford never replied back to me on a new Corvette after they asked if I was a Canadian and I replied YES.

And don't forget about the border fee, A/C fee, inspections, GST, and difference in what the bank will give you in comparison to what the dollar is at. There is more to bringing a car across - but I'm sure someone will give you the posted information.

Brought back a 99 frc 5 months ago not really a big deal you must give the u.s border 72 hours notice
-pay gst at canadian side
-pay inspection fee
-pay a/c tax
-mine required no modifications
-call GM USA obtain recall clearance letter
the biggest thing is make sure you have all title and other paper work when you come across not too bad I would do again

GM USA Warranty Policy per Owner's Manual requires that the car be registered for at least 6 months in a US jurisdiction meaning that you or your corporation would have to register the car in the US preferably in a sales tax free jurisdiction and arrange for proper insurance coverage there depending on where and for how long you are going to use the car. Your Canadian provincial DMV will tell you how long you can drive a car in that province with US licencing. Some provinces say 90 days....about the length of the Canadian Corvette season from what I can tell. You should check to see if the 90 days is the total allowable days in a year notwithstanding that you may take the car out of the province for days or weeks at a time so you might be able to have a series of 90 day periods. The US registration would require that you have a US corporation ($400.00) as you personally would not be able to register the vehicle in the US if your residence is not there but in Canada. If you are a snowbird that might enable you to register in the US.

GM's warranty policy on new vehicles also requires that the car have 7,500 miles on it if it is imported into Canada (or when the mileage shown on the bill of sale which will be verified when you cross into Canada).

You need to buy from a dealer that is not near the Canadian border. GM monitors the dealers, particularly those in places like Detroit but if you were to buy a new car in, say Georgia or Pennsylvania the dealer would sell to you, particularly if the purchaser was a corporation domiciled in a sales tax free state.

NO GST or PST payable if your corporation buys the car in a sales tax free state.
