Default Have 4.10's? Step Inside...

I'm looking to clear up a few questions that I have about a gear swap. I'm running an MN6 right now, basically stock vehicle, stockish tarrs, and I'm considering a gear upgrade. So my questions:

1) What are your highway cruising RPMs at around 75 MPH?
2) Traction issues? Tire wear because of said issues?
3) What gear are you in crossing the 1/4 mile line?
4) What kind of ET changes did you experience?

Discuss.

You know I dont really know what a 75MPH cruise would be. Speed limits are at most 65 around me and if I'm going faster than that I'm not cruising. Must be somewhere in the 1800-1900 range. You will have traction issues if you stomp on it everywhere. I never really get on it on the street W/O TC so I have no issue with it. At the track I had MT drag radials and they hooked good with 400+rwhp. You will trap in 4th gear. Can't say what I gained in the 1/4. When I did gears I did H/C and a bunch of other goodies at the same time I don't have the patience to do it one mod at a time.

I like many others love 4.10s. Probably one of the best bang for your buck performance mods. You won't regret it

For the cruising speed, just do this:

Take your RPMs at an speed and multiply by 1.2.

(4.10-3.42)/3.42 = .1988 ~ .2.

Your RPMs with the 4.10s will be 20% higher than with the 3.42s. Hope this gives you an idea of where you'll be.

I have an M6 with 4:10s installed by ECS including the case hardened shaft. By far it was the most noticed performance upgrade done so far including headers, performance tune etc. At 70 it's turning around 1850. I'm still getting 25/26mpg with 363rwhp-which is still better than the wifes Honda.

If you plan on leaving your car stock and/or most of your driving is on the street or 1/4 mile then you will really benefit from 410s.

Traction is what you make of it. Give it a bit less gas and you will have plenty of traction. You will have to experiment with your setup to see how much gas and how quick you can release the clutch and still have traction.

You will cross the 1/4 mile in 4th gear. With Drag Radials I saw a 3 tenth decrease in ET in the 1/4 mile with 410 gears.

Do it you will love them

replaced my 342s with 410s last fall, this has proven to be a great bang for the buck. i have noticed many folks believe the 410s are to much, not the case. with a mn6 you can really drive the car more efficiently, not to mention the "off the line" perf. they feel like 50 hp.

410s are not a problem on a street car. you will not be winding your car out on the hwy, nor will it drastically effect mpg, just a quicker car overall. your dyno #s will not be greatly improved but rwt will most certainly increase.

Not that I've done many performance mods, but 4.10s have made my mostly stock car both more fun to drive, validates 6th gear, and yes improved my fuel economy giving me 31.8MPG on flat ground with the cruise set here at sea level at cruising speeds (1700RPMs at 65MPH in 6th rather than 2500RPMs at 65 in 5th with the 3:42s. Next to audio and wheels/tires this mod has been my most expensive but at $1200 I would do it again without thinking about it.

How much RWHP do you typically lose "on a dyno" from drivetrain loss?

OK, Let me expand a little more on this. My goal with my car is to hit 10s. I've set this for myself as a nice, attainable number. The car is daily driven to and from work about 15 miles each way and I'll bring it out in the evenings when the girlfriend whines about hating how we always drive her car.

The idea for my set up is:

Large cam
Some intake
LTs
X-Pipe with cut-outs
Stock exhaust
Upgraded rear-end/drivetrain components
Sticky tires
150 Wet Shot

With that said, am I still going to like these gears?

Don't go under 3.90.
I put 3.73 in my TA and barely felt a difference if any at all.
Sounds like your going to have a STRONG setup.

Like I said, 10s is the goal. I had originally planned on proposing to my girlfriend the first run that I broke 10s on, but it's going to be further away than I planned, so I've kept the goal of going 10s and I'll probably propose sooner than I reach cage times.

The 4.10 really changes the car and makes 6th gear useable. I stopped paying attention to revs, but I think I turn a little over 2K at 80mph, so you would be a little under 2K at 75. In a quarter mile you will be in 4th. I put down about 350 RWHP and trapped in mid to high 12s. Tires are a problem and runflats will not hook up and will cause wheel hop which can wipe the differential. I am running oversize - Z06 size - Firestone Wide Ovals which are inexpensive at less than $600 per set of 4 and hook up well in 1st when hot with no hop. When cold, they will spin and hop so throttle control is needed when its cool here in AZ. During the hot months, I can blast away without worry. At the track, you can burn out to get them hot.
