Does anyone know exactly what the problem is? I have read about people having this problem many times.
I have an 02 and have never seen leaking diff fluid. Was this problem mainly on 03+ year cars? How can you tell if your butt is leaking if it doesnt leave a puddle?
Many differntial side plates (covers) where put on with one bolt torqued too tightly, thus dimpling the aluminum side plate (cover) Once dimpled, it's done. There's your leak. Replacing just a gasket does NO good.
I had my side cover replaced and was shown the one that came off. Just one bolt torqued to tightly and the side plate was ruined. It came from Bowling Green that way as many have.. Mine also is an 02, built in September 01
The level should be just at the bottom of the fill hole opening and no lower than 6mm below.
Pull the fill plug, it should be filled until it just starts to come out of the fill hole. Once it drips out, let it drip for a while (until it stops) put the fill plug back in, tighten to 26 lb ft and you're done.
Before everyone starts bashing GM, your repair will be covered under the GM good will policy. Especially with previous repair attempts. It is the dealership service manager who is saying no. Insist that he call in the claim to GM for approval or go to another dealership that will. If the service manager refuses, then call 1-800-222-1020 and open a complaint against the dealership. Just be nice until it's time not to be nice! Good luck

Call the GM Customer service number. I had mine repaired three times and on the third one, I made a call to complain to them about having so many problems. The person on the spot offered to extend my factory warranty on the differential to 5 years, 60K miles. Got a letter in the mail about a week later confirming that. Well worth the try to get them to cover this.

having read that several owners have filled their diff. with REDLINE OIL.
if I remove the level plug on my 2004, and find it is more than 6mm below the fill-hole.
What Should I do.?
1. Do I just top up with GM recommended oil.
2. Drain all the old oil out and re-fill with REDLINE OIL
or is there a 3rd option i have not thought about.
If your calls to GM people with pull don't work, try this.
1. Find a small GM dealer in country town.
2. Remind him that you are a loyal GM customer.
3. Remind him that no part of drive train should go out in 50k miles.
4. Remind him that you do not abuse car; he should be able to see from the external appearance of vehicle.
5. Ask him "for some help." Do not demand. Tell him you will even split some of the cost with him.
6. He has access to $$ from GM where he can show some 'customer appreciation.'
Worked for me at 50k on a 2000 Trans Am LS1 with a bad rear. First time I talked with guy he called me back and told me to bring $300. Still had a diff rear end problem when I drove car out of dealership. I offered to split cost again. He told me NO. His specific words were: You do not want to split cost this time. He changed out entire rear pumpkin parts. Normally that would have cost a customer over $2000.
I was happy as a lark. I continue to say many many good things about Paul Moak Pontiac in Ridgeland, Ms. They have always been very courteous, personable, and honest.
They certainly deserved the burgers, fries, and Blue Bell that appeared in their service dept.
