Hi guys, I have the chrome covers on my rear side lights and over the third brake light, which have been on for about 5 years. Has anyone taken them off and how difficult was it ,if at all? I thought that maybe I should use a hair dryer to loosen it up, but what would be the best solution to remove the goo left on from the tape? Thanks for any help.
slip some dental floss or fishing line between the cover and the lens.... in a sawing motions , slice back and forth.
that will take the cover off.
Then use the WD-40
If it has been on for 5 years you might have to leave the WD-40 for 5 minutes before wiping and repeat several times.
The WD-40 shouldn't hurt the paint. In fact, it works good as a road tar remover. You just wash the car with car soap afterward.
Cheers
Learn something new everyday... I thought that WD-40 contained acetone, which is what helps in removing glue/residue, but lethal to paint/clearcoat - guess not!
Either way, hairdryer, WD-40, goo-gone (from Wally-World), nail polish remover and fish-line are all good techniques. If nothing else works, try a bit of lacquer thinner of a rag. Good Luck!
Thanks for the help, I have goo gone but wasn't sure about putting it on the paint. I didn't think about wd40 but I will try it. I'm removing all the chrome on the back and replacing with just led taillights, third brake lite and backup lights, and also the side marker lights. I would love to remove those spears that are under the taillights(my wifes' idea) but I'm afraid of removing them for fear of messing up the paint. Thanks guys.

Also Auto Prep by Klean-Strip. It comes in a spray can and is safe for painted or plastic surfaces. Most auto parts stores carry it in or near their paints and supplies.
