2 flathead screws for the lisence plate, 4 torx 15 screws for the mounts.

My best time: 32 seconds w/o power tools.

True, but I'll be getting blackout Adjures if this works. I'll need the extra light. The Whole premise of my car is "more than meets the eye" (I think the movie "transformers" rubbed off on me)

Okay yall, here's the definitive results. (note, the revers light housing being used is a Adjure diamond plate housing with SMOKED lenses. Those of you with clear lenses will see substantially better results)

Here are the contenders:
*enthusiastic announcer's voice*

In the the right corner weighing in at a whopping $8 per pair to the wallet is the 2357 Extended life incandescent. Many consider this to be the upgrade. to the OEM 2057 or 1157 bulbs. The 2357 features not one but 2 filaments.

In the left corner, the challenger: a 9005 Sylvania silverstar 9005 high beam halogen. This bulb is being mounted with a 9005 stamped steel headlight bulb mount. This bulb is often part of the first headlight upgrade for any GM dual-bulb vehicle.

(crowd goes wild)

Round 1 (open bulb test)
for this test, removed the left 2357 bulb and stripped the wires to provide contact points for the 9005. (i could have cut them but i wanted the procedure to be completely reversible)

as you can see the 9005 is significantly brighter drowning out the 2357 even though it's further away from the camera.

Round II (mounted test)
In order to secure the 9005 steel bulb mount, I had to shave away a small section to allow room for the plastic twist lock of the stock 2358 mount.

The 9005 again provides noticeably more output than the 2357

Round III (output against wall test) *knockout*
I used a small piece of cardboard to block out each light while i took a picture of the other's output:

I"ll let you guess which one was the winner.

And for those of you worried about heat? My conclusion is that you can leave the 9005 running as long as you want. I let the bulbs run constantly between tests (which happened to be the entire length of Lynard Skynard's "Freebird".....which is also the same amount of time it would take if you let the Wife or S.O. back the car down a standard length driveway )

I will be securing the steel mounts to the backup plate with high-temp silicone.

Peace Yall

WOW! Great mod. I can see this assisting in backing up. Now you got to figure out how to turn them on while you are driving to make the Tailgater's back off fast.

George,

Let us know after using them for a few days how the Adjure lenses and the silicone bulb mount are holding up. I'm still looking at alternative bulbs for my new Adjures, but had not considered the 9005 bulbs. I may be sending you a PM asking for a little more detail on how you mounted the 9005 socket. Great job. I bet you now have the brightest backup lights on a Corvette IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!!! Now you just need to get a HID conversion kit in there to replace that stock 9005 bulb.

I"m not sure exactly what you want in a How To. just shave the area I showed you, glue and stick. If you want this modification to be perminant, you can use plastic epoxy and it will be perminant. Pending how th silicone holds up I may do this.

HIDS need time to warm up....but don't think i'm beyond trying them. I just happen to have some leftover 9006 HID capsules. The ony other way I can think of to improve lighting is projector housings....but they'll look like poop with a blackout kit.

Anyone know if GM sells the stamped steel bulb mount seperate from the reflector housing? (I'll check tomorrow afternoon)

Okay, take a bunch more pictures. You have to understand, I'm not mechanically inclined at all but I'm a hellava direction follower (thanks to Uncle Sam). Whatever parts are needed, the polarity of the wires, anything will help. Remember, I'm the guy who if you see a hammer in my hand has probably just broke something.

George,

Great mod, I will be doing this one as well since I have the parts !!

Problem is that most folks will not have a spare 9005 or 9006 metal mount like you and I do Nor can I think of where one might get one short of cannibalizing a C5 light assembly.

BTW, you still should wire up a momentary contact switch in the console to scare the hell out of tailgaters
I recall that I did this on my old suburban with a set of driving lights

Worked GREAT, but those were the days before "Road Rage" shootings

I"ll see if the key part is available from the dealership tomorrow. If it is, then i'll do another write up on my mom's 98. (with all the pics yo'll ever need) Her's is a stock lens so it should be interesting.

And Why not?....it's not like you'll be tailgateing me (is it still called tailgating if it's a vette...all the other nicknames sounded a little fruity to me)

Yea, but I'm a wimp when it comes to my Vette. I'm learning, but if you spent anytime with me while working on this thing, you'd take my tools and ban me from the garage!
