CAN ANYONE POST PICS OF OR EXPLAIN HOW I WOULD GO ABOUT CHECKING THE FLUID IN MY REAR DIFF? I HAVE A 2000 WITH A MN6 TRANNY AND WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE FLUID LEVEL IS GOOD AS I AM ABOUT TO DRIVE TO COLORADO FROM WISCONSIN. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRICIATED!!!!
The fluid level is checked via the fill hole, which is located low on the rear of the differential, passenger's side. If memory serves me, it requires a 10mm Allen wrench to remove it. The fluid level should be even with the bottom of the hole.
There is a fill plug about halfway up on the back of the diff that you remove with, I believe, a 10mm allen key. With the car jacked up, if necessary to reach the plug, and level, remove the plug and stick your finger in the hole. If the fluid is up to the bottom of the fill hole, the diff is full. If not, add until it starts to dribble out the fill hole.
Are you leaking fluid and not sure how much you have left? If so, I'd think about getting it fixed first or taking another car on a long trip.
You guys are great!!! My rear diff was fixed in 2002 and 2004 but it just keeps comeing back. It does not leak much just a couple spots on the garage floor. I usually just have the dealership check it when they do my oil changes but I do not need one before I leave so I would just like to ensure that the fluid level is good before I drive through some mountains!!
