Default Oil pressure question

I have a 383 stroker motor with a 243/250 cam and a ported LS6 oil pump using 15W50 Full syn oil. On startup it will idle around 50-55psi then drop down to around 30-35psi when everything is warmed up. On full open throttle it will hang around 25-29psi which I feel is still low imop. Is this normal for this motor or should I have higher oil pressure.

It is not the throttle position that determines oil pressure, but the engine RPM. As RPM rise you should see oil pressure rise. Running about 1500 RPM (cruising on highway in 6th gear) you should see 30 to 35 PSI. At a constant 3000 RPM you should see 40 plus PSI.

The oil pressure gauge has a "delay" in reporting the pressure. If you simply rev the engine (blip the throttle) you may not accurately see oil pressure rise and fall. You need a constant engine speed for about 1 to 2 seconds to see an "accurate" pressure reading.

To add to this explanation....I believe and correct me if I am wrong, you should see atleast 10psi for every 1000 rpm.

This could be ideal for many engines, but I've noticed on my own engine builds that 5psi per 1000rpm is acceptable. Provided pressure at idle is above 25.

I wonder if this is the case and my idle pressure is always around 25psi. It's a really weird problem and i plan on installing an oil pressure gauge to see if I’m getting an accurate reading of the oil as I know C-5's are known for blowing oil pressure sending units. Might be a good start as the last thing I want to do is tear apart my motor. I really don't have any negative side effects because of the low oil pressure and when I’m in the upper rpms oil pressure slowly begins to climb throughout the rpm range. But will still stay around 30psi. I didn't know if this a normal condition with a ported LS6 oil pump. Any other ideas and thanks BlackZ06 I didn't know that and is helpful info.

Well I surely can't tell you about the ported oil pump, however on my mostly stock ls6 engine, I see about 30-32psi @ idle, and about 55-65psi @ 6000rpm

If that's the case I have a problem. At 6000rpms my oil pres claims to be 38psi!
