Default header question

I have an 02 z06 that I am looking to get some longtubes for. I am pretty well settled on a set of Kooks headers. My main decision regards the sizing of the tubes and x pipe. Kooks sells both 1 3/4 and 1 7/8 inch primaries and a 3x3 and 3x2.5 x pipes. I will be running cats. The car is stock, but will get a Halltech Stinger, plugs, wires, and possibly a thermostat. In the future the car might be getting a head and cam package, but that could be far into the future. What size would you guys recommend I get?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Have you decided on the cam/head package yet? That will determine how much you need to open up the exhaust. I would say 1-3/4 & 2-1/2 pipes for street use with a good street cam. If you want to race either straight line or auto-x I might say the larger set-up.

The 1-3/4 will be best for you currently and will be fine for a later heads/cam setup. Just my .02, other opinions may differ.

I haven't chosen a head and cam package as of yet. It's just something that I'm considering for the future. Originally I had the 1 3/4 headers with a 3x3 x pipe on order. They didn't have the parts in stock, so I can choose a different size if I want. Will having the 1 3/4 hold the car back very much if it does have a head and cam package?

I am heading down the same road, but I possibly see a set of turbos in my 03's future. I don't mean to steal the thread, but if I get the 1 7/8" will they hurt more than help vs. the 1 3/4"??

If you're getting turbos then don't buy headers. The turbos will replace the headers with turbo manifolds. Unless you're going with the rear mount STS setup.....

the STS was what I was considering, and since they are driven off of exhaust then I figured the more the better. But would 1 7/8" take away from anything in the time gap between headers and turbos??

Well, it's just my opinion but I wouldn't get 7/8 even with the turbos unless you have a stroked built motor with an appropriate cam. I'm not sure you would see any gain over 3/4 with primaries that big especially if you aren't revving high (8K).
