Hey, i know this will probably sound like a stupid question, but what exactly are "cats". Does this term refer to the catback exhaust, or is it something totally different? Thanks
So, will replacing the stock cats for z06 cats make my 2001 coupe sound any better?
If you go to a Z06 system, you will be eliminating 2 of the 4 cats your car has. The Z doesnt use the "pup cats" as do the other models......so yes, using a sytem from a Z will change your exhaust tone , beit only slightly, but whats better than that is the better flow you will achieve. I would ditch the whole idea though & go with a quality set of longtube headders, an X pipe & a pair of high flow cats..

Changing just your cats will not help your sound. Changing to headers and/or changing the cat-back (mufflers) will.
Do a search for header install (probably by England Green) and you will get a bunch of photos to refer to. The pipe with the "bulge" in it will be the hi-flow cats. The 6ft long section they are in is commonly referred to as the mid-pipe (and almost always includes an x-pipe). The pipe that goes over the rear axles and includes the mufflers and tips is called the cat-back.
