Default Weird Chips in Hood

No not pringles....

I noticed yesterday a lot of small (what seemed to be rock chips) white flakes.

any common sense would say rock chips but it is smooth as glass.

Pictures do not show them very well.

I took it by a local body shop and they say to try and buff it out, if that does not work it will need to be painted.

you cant tell from far away but up close its bad.

It might be from a truck on the highway. I've been behind trucks loosing sand. It sandblasted my Blazer, windshield and all. David

I had something similar from what I can tell on the pics, mine was tiny small etched marks. I think it was from sprayed brake/clutch fluid. Let me know how it goes....

Has hood been repainted. Could have been some contamination on base when clear was put on.

Did buffing help or did you have to repaint?

I had a problem that was very much like you described. The spots were like 'non shiny' opaic color (MY). I had my favorite body shop light sand and buff out. It is a clear coat issue, but it was not determined what caused the problem. Also, after the sand/buff, no further issues (1.5 years so far). Good luck!

I have similar spots but the hood has been partially repainted as well. I'm going to be hitting it with some 3M rubbing compound to buff out some paint runs, over spray and those spots.

I was going to try clay bar too because I just had it detailed from a good place here. I went back to show them my chemical water spots (from sprinklers) and they offered to clay bar it for me. So if for some reason you don't want to do it yourself you can bring it in to a detailer to clay it for you. I will probably wind up getting my own and doing it because I don't think they did a very good job at it.

Reading about clay Bar procedure... they say to put your hand in a plastic bag and rub your paint...

I did this and I felt I was rubbing a porcupine.

I will try the clay bar tonight and post results.

Hope the spots come off - the clay bar is really very easy to use and just might do the trick. Good luck.

could be oxidation from something that is acidic, ex acid rain, bird crap, or bugs that have been left on for a while, if the clay bar doesnt work just sand with some 2000 or lighter some places sell 2500 grit or even 5000 grit paper, that will be alot easier to get the sand scratches out when you buff it, hard clear tends to let the scratches die back. hope that helps good luck

Dude leave the sanding to the pros, I wouldnt mess with that cause you could mess it up even worse, clay bar should take care of it just remember to use plenty of the "lube" (spray stuff thats in the kit)
