I'm 2500 miles from home and I gave the 2001 to my son to take a friend out for lunch (yes, a babe - no pics - sorry!).
When he returned he told me we might have a problem - it was making a "chattering" noise in 2nd and 3rd gear - he could hardly pull it into the parking lot.
I went out and indeed it was, but even in first - shaking and "chattering".
Now I've owned other manual cars and when the clutch was bad it would slip, but NOT make that kind of racket.
I had it flat-bedded to a (s)dealership and they'll start looking to fix it on Monday morning.
Any ideas on what they're gonna' find - and nail me for???
I don't have a good feeling about this!
I don't - and that's part of what's killing me for the wait! But I don't know what else it could be which is why I asked here, thinking somebody could give me a "preview."
All I know is that they're gonna' drop the drive train in the AM and give me the news.
Normally that would have been my first thought! But not this time. He was very sick about it. I remembered wrecking my Dad's car and having to pick him up after work - lucky I'm here to tell the tale!
I hope its just something simple but even something simple as throw out bearing can cost big $$$ when it comes to clutch. To me, it honestly sounds like transmission though

Yeah, I wasn't really sure it was the "slipping" clutch, at least as I knew of one to be.
That "transmission" talk doesn't sound too good, either!

not sure I completly understand your problem from the description. is the car making noise when you are in gear and driving it? or is it only doing it when you put it in to gear and start to release the clutch?
does it do it when its in neutral or when its in any other gear and your driving?

Only when driving (I only drove it around the parking lot). No noise when in neutral (other than the exhaust ).
Thanks for the input - today I find out (but I'm still taking ideas!).
