I'm aware orange peel is pretty common on all factory paint, but it's really bad on Vette's. I had a body man go look at the 04 z06 before I bought it to make sure there was no paintwork. One of many things he looked for was to make sure the factory orange peel was consistent on all panels. Any way I can lessen the orange peel?
Find a good body shop and have them wet sand and buff, that will not take it all out but will help, or wet sand and re-clear coat. From what I understand painting fiberglass with the new paints, the orange peel is common...
You may want to think about that before you take the orange peel out.
I have a black one, so I hear ya, I've been looking into getting the car wet sanded or recleared (but the reclearing is as expensive as a paint job).
Most of the body guys I've spoken to have talked me out of it. The surface will be glass smooth, but, if a fly lands on it it will scratch. If you wipe it, it will scratch . . .you get the point.
My car looks pretty good, but I wanted to start fresh (I bought it used) without any swirls, marks, whatever.
In discussing it with the body guys, they pretty much convinced me that a little orange peel is way easier to maintain than none.
Weird. I can't see it on mine. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.
Then you're lucky
If you take care of the finish (wax it, claybar once in a while) you can get it to the point where you cant see any orange peel on the hood, roof, tops of the fenders. You usualy can see some if you look down the sides (like from front to back).
I guess it varies from car to car and from color to color. Lighter colors (silver/white) much easier to maintain, darker colors (dark blues/deep reds) will show any blemish (including orangepeel) more. Black......thats like a religion.
