Default Problem Fixing Headlight Gear

GOT THE MOTOR-GEAR UNIT OFF THAT LIFTS AND LOWERS THE HEADLIGHT JUST LIKE THE THREADS SHOW, BUT THE METAL PART THAT FITS IN THE GEAR IS ALL RUSTED AND COVERED WITH CRUD. I NOTICE THE GEAR HOUSING HAS WHAT APPEARS TO BE A VENT HOLE IN IT (A CLEAN SQUARE HOLE). HAS ANYONE FIXING THE HEADLIGHT GEAR HAD THIS EXPERIENCE. IT MAKES ME WONDER ABOUT THE CAR. APPRECIATE ANY RESPONSES.

I'm trying to get the pictures downloaded. The rusted part is the rotating part with the fingers that fit in the plastic wheel.

i just tried (unsuccessfully) to fix my headlight motor, and the worm gear (looks like a screw with larger threads) had lots of amber-colored jelly on it, which I suspect is for corrosion-prevention. My install instructions said to spray the new gear with white lithium grease. I would suggest cleaning the worm gear with wd-40 and a toothbrush, and then coating everything with white lithium greast.
