going to my first track day with a few friends at streets of willow on sept 14th. my car is near stock with just an exhaust and runcraps.
I was thinking about getting some new brakepads and a helmet. is there anything else I'm forgetting or anything that is a must have?
I saw on the list a 2004 z06 is going to be there. is that anyone here on corvetteforum?
my one concern is that I don't have any previous experience at the track. is this a good time to get some or should I wait and save up for an advanced driving school
They likely have a helmet you can rent/use. Get some good shoes that are very comfortable and good support (presumes you have the MN6).
Take the driving school or if they do the lead/follow first couple times, that will be good too so as to learn where the racing line is.
Stay hydrated.. Drink LOTS of water, as your A/C will likely be off and it can get warm inside the car especially with a helmet on for any extended period of time.
Take traction control OFF, but leave active handling ON - (COMPETITION MODE - ON). Relax and plan in your head each move.
If at all possible, mount a video camera so you can come back later and watch your mistakes and how to run it better the next time. That helped me more than anything else!
Here's a pic of a tripod mount I made and got a from the folks at the track as it was "securely" attached to the car. Everything else in the car - including floor mats came out - track rules.

I want to participate in this event but I don't want to be the only guy that doesn't know what he's doing. I thought about taking a driving school before but always wanted to try something like this more. Is a driving school something you think is very necessary before going to an event like this?
Just go. See what it is like. Use a little common sense, don't try to drive over your head. They should give you some basic info on dos and don't s. Relax and have fun.
