Default Re-install Stock Air Filter Assembly

I am in California, and it's been another two years, and time for the smog test, so I need to put the stock assembly back in. Although I have the assembly, I must admit I haven't looked at it in the last two years.

I was thinking of assembling out of the car and just setting it where it would normally be attached and using the coupler to hold it in place just for the drive to and from the smog center. My questions are:

1) Will this work, or must it be fastened for it to stay in place?

2) Once I look at the stuff, will I know which way is up for the air cleaner element?

3) Do I have to do a reverse re-learn, or will it be fine? (The shop is 4 miles from my house.)

4) Does anybody have any instructions, or do I even need them?

Thanks for your time.

Why do you need to install the stock assembly? I didn't think any of the aftermarket air intakes were illegal in CA. Long tube headers are a no go, but intakes are fine.

You wish after-market intakes were fine.

Why not just go ahead and fasten it on the grommets - it only takes a second and that way no worries. (Although as long as you drive reasonably it should stay in place for a short trip.) The air filter should only go in one way I believe.

I don't know WHAT I was stressing about. It literally took all of 5 minutes!
