I have a 79 L82 and love it, but lately have started thinking of getting a C5. I know of a 99 for sale with an advertised Z06 style. It has the shortened rear window, but none of the badges of the Z06. Did they make some Z06 style cars without the upgraded engines in 1999?

Thanks.
The Z06 (with the LS6 motor rather than LS1) came out in 01, so that 99 you are looking at is an FRC (fixed roof coupe) it does have the Z51 performance suspension and a few extra goodies (trans cooler I believe) and is bascially a very stripped down version without some of the other options the coupes have (heads up display etc), but power wise and engine wise it has the base LS1 motor with 345hp stock.
The 01 Z06 was the first C5Z06 it had the LS6 motor, it put out 385hp stock...if you want a C5 Z06, get an 02 or newer (if in your budget) you'll have the upgraded Z06 LS6 with 405HP stock.
Hope this helps, I am sure more will chime in with more knowledge and detail...hopefully I got you at least pointed in the right direction

This is a copy of the press release announcing the introduction of the third body style dated September 17, 1988. click here
Actually - the original intent of GM was to introduce an "entry level" Corvette that was de-contented and believe it or not they even planned to offer it with a cloth interior originally. At the last moment, they changed their minds, and decided that the FRC (fixed roof coupe) would be the highest performance, lightest and stiffest C5 of the three. Ultimately - it went on to become the Z06 in 2001 with the introduction of the LS6 engine (385 hp) and in 2002, the Z06 was upgraded to 405hp. They decided against the entry level Corvette because it was determined that it would undermine the performance and quality image that Chevrolet was reaching for.

1999 was the first year for the fixed roof coupe and yes, it had the looks of the Z06 without the Z06 wheels, rear brake ducts, front fog light screens, and of course the motor. If you don't mind not being able to do any open air driving, it is a fine car.

Frank TANk - Even the Z06 doesn't have a tranny cooler. That was only in auto cars and of coarse the Z06 is only a manual car. All frc are manuals too.
Having loved my old C3 ('69 convert.) the C5 is a whole new world for the better. The Z06 is a whole new world from the non C5 Z06 and I feel it is a better car than the new C6 cars except the Z models. GM must agree with me as their new '08 brochure says their '08 Z51 436hp car "approaches the performance of the C5 Z06". That says a lot about the C5 Z06. If you can push the bucks up for an '01 Z06 do it!
Well I looked for months for a 99 or 2000 FRC to buy because they had all the good stuff as standard equipment (engine, tranny, suspension, that makes a Corvette a Corvette)... No extra options to weight it down...
