The temperature here in Palm Springs CA is over 100 for 6 months of the year, with 3 of those over 110 for the most part. The coolant temp sits just left of the 220 mark driving. But seems to go up at idle. Does the C5 have heat issues. Can you idle the car with out it overheating. I drive an 06, 6 LTR Vortec Silverado for work, will let it idle with A/C running and it stays at the center mark.
I have no issues with my Vette, but we only see 100 degree weather here in South Texas and my blower Vette survives fine and rarely in stop and go traffic with the AC on will hit 220, no my 07 Silverado is at 210 all the time

Define: "But seems to go up at idle". The temp you DID mention is still within the operating range albeit a little towards the upper end while moving.
Check for any debris up under and in front of the radiator, i.e. plastic bags, paper, slow mojados, golf ***** (after all you ARE in Palm Springs), etc.
Running down the interstate in 95 degree weather I read about 195, stop and go with the air on it climbs to about 205-210, a tad higher w/o air on in stop and go.
Most trucks have a fan that circulates air all the time but when the clutch senses heat it will turn faster thus increasing the amount of air pulled in through the grille. At least my Ford and Chevy are like that, unless they have switched to electric fans by now.
I will check for debri, how do the fans come on in a C5, on my C4 both come on with A/C, or around 225. My coolant is new along with radiator, cool the water pump be going, there are no leaks. I know they go on the Vortec, we lost 2 from a fleet of 10 before 40K, Chevy seemed to think that was not abnormal ( I do ).
Always the same, complete factory stock. 194 - 198°F. Sitting in heavy traffic when it is scorching out, max's at 205°F then starts back down to 198°F.
In winter, it runs mostly at 194°F.
I should note that I run AC all the time in the AUTO position.
I go to Palm Springs a couple of times a year and drive in the San Fernando Valley all the time in 100 degrees or more and sit on the Ventura Freeway Parking Lot.
I have put in the 176 thermostat and the fans come on, 1 @ 190 and the other @ 200 and it never gets over the 200 range. Every third year, I flush the eng and put in new coolant.
My '04 runs at 192 degrees in OAT temperatures below 80. It seems to max out around 220 on the gauge under more stressful heat related conditions. I guess that's when my fans turn on.
I've been thinking of coming over to Palm Desert for a few days with the vette. I'll have to watch how it acts in 90 to 100+ temps.
This summer coming out of Carson City NV going up 10,000 ft. Mount Rose I hit 243 for about half an minute. I made the summit and it went down quick. Radiator coolant was new and cleaned up front area also. It has not been an issue since and all is normal.
