I had the opportunity to run the vette on an approved speedway the other day. My 99 Vert is bone stock. The fastest top speed I could achieve was 146mph and at that point it seemed to be limited and actually started to decrease in speed. I though top speed in the C5 was up near 170 mph.... Is there a factory governer installed?

is your vette a 6sp or an A4. if a 6sp then you should of stayed in 5th to get a higher speed

That is what I did wrong....It is a 6spd and I did run it up in sixth gear... I never figured to leave it in 5th....I ran it up a second time and it would get to 146 and stop pulling and then the speed actually started dropping...and yes...I had my foot in it all the way....Next time Ill try not shifting into 6th...Thanks for the tip Zilla!...

Gonna try my hand at the Texas Mile soon, I don't think I can top it out in a mile though. At the local high speed straight 'track' I have been to 181, little scary when you are there, gotta be scarier for the 'Busa going 186 'before' me though

There is something very special about the CE's. I love mine also. David
I dont understand why, with enough track, you wouldnt get a higher speed in 6th than 5th? I hate to sound dumb...but can someone explain this to me....??:o
But, isn't the engine rpm limited in any given gear by the computer? Like you can't over-rev it unless you gear down two gears by accident. Same result as a speed limiter. For a given rear end ratio you are only going to go so fast.
I think I once saw a chart showing a theoretical 158 mph top speed with a stock 6 speed C5 coupe before the engine is cut back.
You're correct for all practical purposes...but the PCM will limit it to 255mph.
Best of luck achieving that.
Not exactly true. When I installed my Maggie, Lingenfelter accidently left one of the zeros off the speed sensor multiplier when they wrote the program in my 2000. The speedometer was reading 200 MPH when I was actually only going 20 MPH. As soon as I hit 200 on the speedometer, the computer shut down the injectors and the motor immediately died. It did this time after time. Needless to say, this was a bit embarrassing when I took it for the test drive. I felt like I was driving a bucking bronco!
No, what I stated was exactly true. If you want to go faster than 255mph, you won't be doing it with a GM PCM.
You CAN set the PCM limit to anything (less than that) if you want, in fact you can even create a valet mode and limit your car to 20 mph if you'd like (or mistype)...but that does not disregard the fact you won't be going over 255 on a stock PCM.
