Default "Self Healing" Paint Damage

So how many of you guys have had birds crap on your cars? Have you ever looked at the paint after cleaning the crap up? Usually there's some etching damage, or even some small pits that can be felt with your fingers.

The other day I got hit in 3 separate places ... hood, roof and trunk with some nasty bird crap. After I cleaned it up there was major visible "etching and pitting". The first time something like this ever happened I spend an hour rubbing out the damage and cussing out every bird I saw.

So what I've now discovered is that if you leave the damage alone it will actually "self heal" in a day or two. I've watched this happen 2 or 3 times now, and this last time I was really doubtful that the damage would disappear on its own ... but did. It sure saved some time trying to buff the damage out.

I don't really understand the mechanics behind the paint "self healing" phenomena, but it must be because the chemicals in the bird crap leach back out of the paint with time, and then the paint goes back to its natural state. Anyone else have a theory or the real explanation.

Anyway, just a hint to anyone who gets hit with some nasty bird crap that leaves some damage ... just leave it alone for a couple of days and it should go back to normal.

I think I'll name my Zee ... "Christine" … for those who’ve ever seen the movie.

Maybe too many bird bomb attacks ... Yeah, I know it's hard to believe, but I've seen it happen right before my eyes. No need to sweat it and try buffing out the etching.

This is the best unknown secret for any Corvette owner. Bottom line is don't get too excited if you receive bird crap paint damage because if you leave it alone it will "self heal".

From what I've seen, it probably would with enough time.

Do you live near a Taco Bell? The birds around here eat the jalapenós off the parking lot and as a result, emit pure battery acid out their tail feathers. As far as "yelling" at the birds, just imagine how their tiny A-holes feel if what they are generating strips acrylic! This also explains why these small birds are getting "louder" every year!

I have noticed that, for whatever reason, they do go out of their way to anoint "black" Corvettes. It may be that the additional heat the black paint radiates may act like counter-measures to their internal targeting scanners?

Didn't know GM used this technology too. NISSAN has used it for about 3 years and its supposed to even heal scratches. HISTORY CHANNEL did a deal on PAINT a few months ago and showed how this stuff was developed and how well it works.

Was going to call on the above, but decided to do a Google search and found a site about "Self-Healing Paint". Seems there is such a thing. Me, I think I'll just keep away from trees and power lines.
