I've not heard of someone doing that!
But it is not beyond possible!
A really good body shop could doit!
You will destroy the integrity of the Z06 and it's value! What I would recommend is getting a Vert and upping the Performance which will actually destroy a Z06.
Then you could put on some Z06 badges if you want a Z06 replica! (Not recommended IMHO!)
Funny you mention this. I just watched the movie Redline, (suffered through it actually), and they had a convertible Vette int it. When the camera zoomed in for a close shot, you could see Z06 badges. Pretty stupid mistake? Or was it a conversion? No idea.
I converted a coupe last fall in my garage. It was a lot of work, but not particularly difficult. IMO, a Z06 would be TONS easier as you don't have to remove the rear body tub, etc. The trunk lid is in place already.
I bet that I could do a Z06 in a short weekend if I had the parts ready...
Basically, you'd start w/ removing the top, which is going to be saturated with epoxy, and you'll also have to cut the supports that go through the roof.
You might have to replace the rear quarters, though I've heard both ways on this. You'll then add coupe/convertible latches, etc to the windshield area, a tonneau w/ hinges to the area just in front of the trunk, along with weatherstripping. Add convertible waterfall bracket, waterfall, and side convertible mounts (double as seat belt mounts). Add top assembly. Finish with a few specific pieces of convertible trim, and you have a convertible! Next step, send it off for paint...unless you planned it very well and found used parts in the correct, undamaged color.
Rather just have my vert....along with the comforts that a Zo6 dosen't have.
It's a 50/50 kind of deal...the verts came with more comfort items (ie sport seats & more), while the Z06 came with more perf. items (engine, trans, suspension).
Both can be upgraded to the level of the other, so it's really personal preference on which one someone would want to start with...

The easier way be to start with the Z06 and convert to the vert. less to do.
I would think it would be a lot easier to mod a Vert to the Z06 performance level or better. An extra 50+ HP is not that hard to achieve with some simple mods, not to mention throwing in a few suspension upgrades and soon you will be outrunning and out handling a stock Z06.

Depends on what you're looking to do, but if you upgrade the engine, trans, and suspension, you're very likely going to spend more time than someone that knows what they're doing with body work will spend to convert the roof.
Besides, when you're done, you've got a convertible Z06 one way, and a run of the mill upgraded vert the other. Most people that upgrade the power of the verts do not upgrade the transmission and suspension...
Both ways are fine...and starting with a vert might be preferred if you're ultimate goals are substantially more power, etc.
If you already own a Z06, it really makes more sense to just have it converted...
