Where can I find more info on CAGS? All I heard is that its a gas economy thing.
From what I read in this forum it seemed like an incredibly annoying "feature" and was dreading it.
After driving 2 separate cars today I realized that nothing got in the way of regular shifting, not once did I have a hard time up or downshifting linearly.
newme, when you least want it to.............
Usually when you start from a stop, and go in 1st up to around 2k rpms.........it will display a light, and you MUST do one of two things........either shift to 4th, and then out of 4th, to whichever gear you want.......
Or, you can on purpose run the auto to past the light( when it comes up), and it will go out, and then shift as you please......usually around 3k rpm's.......
1st to 4th, is a bad deal in rush hour traffic..........BUT, you can get around it........and you can disconnect it......your choice
Exactly right. Most of the time I don't have a problem with it. You can easily shift into second before it engages or run the rpm to about 2500-3000 and go past CAGS intrusion. Every once in a while though, traffic conditions are such that you find yourself shifting in 4th at 15 mph .. a real drag.
The conditions under which CAGS engages are very specific, and are outlined in the owners manual. The coolant temp has to be above 169 (or something like that), and the car must be in 1st, and the rpm between a certain range.
I thought I could live with it, but I went ahead and bought the defeat, which I'll install the next time I get the car in the air. I mean, it's not a TERRIBLE thing, but is just a PITA when it gets you.
It only helps fuel economy b/c of the specific testing procedures that the EPA uses. CAGS bypasses are cheap <$20 and easy to install, so its a no-brainer. The most problems I had with CAGS was when you are in trafic and everyone else is slow slow you end up having to skip-shift all the time.
Shifting below 3k? Ah, now that I'll soon be a Vette owner I better get used to the new powerband :)
So a bit off topic, but please tell me that GM is not that **** when it comes to warranties that baby items like a CAGS disabler or K&N would be a point of argument?
I don't think the CAGS defeat would create warranty problems. If you have concerns about it, however, it's very easy to remove before you take your car to the dealership.
Thanks - just got my first afternoon in traffic and the !@#$ thing caught me at least 3 times. As you advertised, it only kicked in when least expected.
Particularly noticeable since a local policeman had been "stealthily" following me for a few miles, waiting for me to do something stupid I guess. Which I would undoubtedly had done had I not known he was there...
Too bad he could not pull me over for bad CAGS management!!! :D:D
Can the override be installed with a floor jack? I don't really have easy access to a lift...

If you found a Vette club in your area that has ties to a dealer, they usually have a shop night where you can use their lifts. Just don't forget your jacking pucks!! :D :D
I was able to install it without raising the car. Two givens - I am six foot three and have long arms and I have an inclined driveway with a hump in it that makes an inverted v. I parked the car with the rear wheels on the hump. I was able to get my chest touching the bottom of the muffler and with my left hand poking in above the driver side pipe I could get my hand on packard connector. THE key to this was to have enough light under the car to see what I was doing. It was quite a stretch but I did it! only certain angles worked to see part of the solenoid assembly. Had a neck ache for a gay, but it made a difference to my drvining style.
By the way I had a CAGS on my 95 Vert and with 6 years under GM Warranty, never had one mention of the CAGS defeat by my Dealer.
If you don't want to spend the $20 on the CAGS eliminator just go to Radio Shack and buy a 2.2Kohm, 1/2Watt resistor. You'll also need a wire tie and some electrical tape. The following link is from LS1.com but the procedure is the same for the C5. http://www.ls1.com/index_ls1_mods.html
I just installed the defeat this weekend. What a joy to actually be able to select the gear I want ! I used a kwiklift, but you'd be able to install the defeat if you can get the car high enough (and safely enough) to crawl under. Installing the gizmo takes about 30 seconds, once you can reach the tranny.

I think I'm going to regret asking: what are "jacking pucks"??
Jacking pucks are just round pieces of metal or hard rubber which are placed at the side jacking points of the car. They keep your rocker panels from damage. I think the owner's manual explains jacking the car (but I have not looked at in it a while). Keep asking questions; it's how we all learn.
If some jerk in front of you can't or won't go forward, you can't get the speed to avoid the dreaded 1-4 shift. Or, if the road is wet and you start to put the hammer down and your wheels start to spin and you lift the throttle, you are in 1-4 territory, lugging your engine and burning your valves. You can get the Cags eliminator for about $20. UNless you live in a state where you are the only resident, you should buy this device!!
