This column lock issue is really getting out of hand lately. There have been several posts regarding this in the past few weeks. Do a search and read them!!!. The first 2 issues of the recall removed the locking device in the column, but did not correct the fuel shut off feature!!!. Many of the after market kits don't address the fuel issue either. My neighbor just had the same problem . The car shut off when reaching 2 MPH. The 1st 2 portions of the recall had been taken of previously, His column didn't lock, but the fuel shut off. He got the pull key and wait....... and also "column lock" on the DIC. He had the car flatbedded to the local dealer for repairs. They told him $450.00 for repairs!!!. He is somewhat disabled and doesn't speak very well so I did the calling to the dealer for him. I explained to the service manager that PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL .GM-P06-028-04006C needs to done. This is an unpublicized safety recall. There is a phone # in this bullitin that can be called by the service dept and it explains that this is a SAFETY RECALL and will by covered by GM regardless of mileage, time, or # of owners. The dealer didn't believe me.I said just call the #!!!. They called me back about 1/2 hour later..They will fix my neighbor's vette @ NO CHARGE.per GM. This "C" version of the recall elimiates the fuel shut off issue. The first 2 portions of the recall MUST also be done prior to the "C" portion. I believe that this latest version also instructs the dealer to destroy the previous 1 and 2 recall paperwork. From now on, they are to do the entire procedure, remove the locking devices and install the new kit that eliminates the fuel problem. Hope this helps.

I haven't done anything yet but my thoughts are to buy the CLB. Have the dealer do the recalls which eliminate the lock plate and the fuel shut off issues. Then remove K harness and install CLB.

Any comments as to what would be wrong with that.

If you have the dealer do all 3 of the steps in the safety recall (warrenty), there is no need for the bypass........

EXACTLY
I just went through this. And yes the dealer did want almost 400.00 to properly resolve the problem.
I won't mention the stealerships name but it is a reputable Dealer in Central Florida.

The way I see it the Stealerships are paid by GM to eradicate the problem........but that's not good enough for the Stealerships, so they ADD ON a huge charge.......by the time it's over with, they probably make 600.00 - 800.00 on roughly 1 hours worth of work.

Now here's what they tried to pull on me.

They were doing the recall by GM's standards...........they then call and tell me I need a new actuator..............Now this actuator can be purchased for roughly 20.00 by means of the Internet.

The stealership wanted almost 200.00 for the part.

The stealership was already into the column to do the recall by GM standards..............so all they had to do is plug in a new actuator......
They wanted 169.00 labor.........to wire in an actuator..........

Said and done after taxes...........390.00 plus whatever GM pays them for the recall.

Had this been a little old lady who didn't know anything about cars.........they'd have gotten away with it.

That is specifically why people still write threads about this subject.

Probably one of many reason why it is a current discussion.

You didn't pay nearly $400. did you?

Never ceases to amaze me at how this topic drives a few members here absolutely nuts. They just can't stand it that people want to continue to discuss the issue, especially when it occurs to them or they get in the middle of dealing with the issue.

So instead of just not opening the post about column lock issues, some member feel they must contribute to the thread by posting mean spirited comments.

My advise is just ignore those people, and discuss the issue until you are satisfied and have it resolved.

I agree 100%!!!!!!!!!!
You're absolutely correct.
What it boils down to is a few members who feel they must tell others what to do, or what they should do, rather than just ignoring the thread that irritates them.

I know that when thew column lock issue happened to me, I wanted to discuss it and I'm glad I did.
I learned a good bit about the car thanks to guys like you and several others.
I won't address the two posters who snidely commented because I flat out refuse to have any type of altercation with any forum members which only serves to escalate events.

And no I didn't pay the 400.00.
I took your advice and purchased a column lock bypass from a forum vendor.........it should be here in a few days.
Then I'll TRY to install it. So I'll probably be posting again on the subject.

Thank you for your help.

If any poster on this issue states that they have read both stickies and/or searched this issue, then there are a number of us here who will offer help and/or advice.
All too often however, I'm seeing guys just post up wanting advice or help and have no intention of searching or reading the two stickies on this CL issue.
If some won't read the stickies, then what good are they?
They are there for a purpose. That's why the forum moderators made them stickies in the first place.

So let me get this straight, the intent of the forum is to have a few posts about a subject, if it's an issue of concern someone creates a sticky and from that point forward there can be no further discussion on that matter. Forum members are only allowed to use the search function to see if the topic has come up, if it has, they are only allowed to read what has been said about the subject. They can only reply to those messages in the archives and if they do they had better have something new to say about the subject.

Am I understanding all you people correctly?

So let's put this into perspective, the 5th generation Corvettes ran from 97-04, that's basically seven years of production vehicles.

In that seven years since they were new practically every subject matter has come up and been discussed several times. So every new member coming into the forum that has acquired a 5th generation Corvette can only post about a subject that doesn't bother a few members and if it has never been discuessed before.

So that means no further discussion on this matter. We don't want to hear about you changing your stock wheels, exhaust, adding headers, changing your air intake system, and we don't want any posts about you tinting your windows, washing your Corvette, oh and for gawd's sake do not come onto this forum and tell us you just bought a Corvette, it's a used Corvette it means nothing to anyone here because they all have had one before you, and besides that there is a good chance someone else who owned that Vette before you already posted that they bought it so you are not allowed to post about the same vehicle. Also we should not allow you to post anything about any of the vendors because we've already read a number of posts about the vendor some good some bad, we don't want to hear about you putting black outs on your lens, we don't want to hear about you installing MP3 players or third party stereos or worst that you had to replace a battery. All this has been discussed before. Don't come onto this forum and ask about your brake pads and rotors, those have been discussed thousands of times, also we need to include tires, every tire made to fit this vehicle and many that don't or haven't been made yet has already been discussed here. We don't want to see your bling, lots of folks long before you have shown us their bling so chrome on the engine components - that's all old stuff to us we don't want to hear or read about it, no no now we don't want you posting about the types of fluids you run, that has been discussed go use the search function and read about it. This forum is only for reading not posting. Don't be posting pictures of your Corvette either, many have already posted pictures that shouldn't be allowed to be discussed here. If there is a safety concern trust us here on the forum we have already discussed it so do a search and read, but do not start a post about that same subject. It doesn't matter if yours is green we've discussed the yellow one's and that is good enough for you. Gosh I'm not sure I can completely compile a full list in this one post without more research to find all the topics that have been discussed and should never ever be discussed again.

I don't understand why Internet Brands even allows sections for other vettes other than the current year models to have the ability to make posts. They should only be archives and you can only search.

WE DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS OR YOUR GOOD TIMES WITH YOUR VETTE! Everyone else has already beaten you here to do that and this bothers some members that you want to talk about your car.

Well, that about sums it up.

Thankfully , there are only a few dead horse beaters, trying to dictate what and what not to discuss.

Most are willing to help, no matter what the topic.......and I'm glad about that because when I had the column lock issue happen to me.....many came to aid in my troubled time.........as a result the problem has been rectified.
