I have a B&M Precision shifter installed on my 04 z06. When putting it in reverse, sometimes it takes some force, while other times it slides right into gear. Also, sometimes I think I'm in reverse and when I hit the throttle it grinds. What could cause all of this? FWIW, it's an 04 with only 8K miles. For the short time the stock shifter was in, I don't remember having this problem.
The nature of the stock trans. makes getting the car into reverse a slight challenge on many cars with a stock shifter.
This then seems worse with an aftermarket shifter that reduces mechanical advantage to reduce the stock "throw" of the shifter.
I have tried several aftermarket shifters on my Z through the years only to end up with the 2008 Z06 shifter I put in last week (the thing is awesome).
Having said that, there are several things you can do.
You could adjust the shifter you have and you can do the "anti venom mod" that reduces the total force required to shift between gears.

You can also try searching under "shifter adjustment" and see what pops up.
Hope this was of some help.
Brian-
Thanks for the response. It's ironic that you switched to the c6 z06 shifter, that's what I've been planning to do. I've heard A LOT of good things about it.

I like it a lot, especially after I adjusted the linkage.
Have a good one!
Brian-
I removed the stock gasket material when installing the B&M(came with a gasket). What do I use for a "gasket" when installing the c6 z06 shifter? Also, what do you mean when you adjusted the linkage? Last, are the throws noticeably shorter than the stock c5 z06 shifter(B&M was quite a difference)?
Sorry about the late reply. I saw your other post as well.
As some of the others have mentioned the GM shifters come with the entire assembly. Three torx bolts and it in. No worries.
