Was just wondering if anyone out there has an opinion on this: I have this Vette all picked out to buy, 2000 Millennium Yellow extremely well cared for and priced right. However my fiancée and I are planning to move from here in Michigan (outside Detroit) to New Mexico at the end of the year and she has decided it would be better if I waited and found a Vette to buy when we get to NM. My problem is that here near Detroit there are many Vetes for sale and as winter approaches the prices are quite reasonable. I have done some searching for Vettes in New Mexico and it seems there are far less and the prices are actually higher. Does anyone have any opinions regarding buying a vette here in Mich vs buying one in the southwest?? Things are getting heated here and I'm hoping for some qualified info to bolster my case. I am prepared for everyone to tell me how P-whipped I am but some honest opinions would be nice as well. Thanks in advance.
I would try to get as much as you can for the price you can afford.....Just cause you are moving to one state dont mean you have to buy from there....you can find a great car from the buy/sell forum from another member......That would be your best bet

Okay, quick question: What on earth brings you to NM? I'm from Albuquerque and being a fellow vette owner, I can tell you this is not the place to buy a vette.
They cost more, from my research a vette here priced around 23k could be found in Florida or somewhere east-coast for about 17/18k. It's rediculious!
If you do buy a vette in the southwest, the only place I can really suggest is Phoenix, AZ. That's where I bought my car from, best price and best selection nearest to NM.
I say if the price is right on the yellow one, do it! Because once you get down here, your gonna see the same car probably priced 4/5k dollars more and your selection is going to be very minimal... Just my 2 cents!
I think you need to try to step back and view the situation from a pragmatic stand point. Are you in "lust" with the idea of getting a Corvette "right now".
Consider the fact that it will be an additional vehicle to transport a tremendous distance.
Also look at the extra mileage you will put on the Vette to get to your new home. (maybe a cracked or chipped windshield and possible paint chips)
Another factor will be taxes. I personally am not knowledgeable of the sales tax rates in Michigan and New Mexico, but you need to check those out. Now, if Michigan's tax rates on used car sales are so much lower than N.M.'s tax rates then it might be enough savings to cover the above listed expenses. However, since you now live in the Republik of Michigan I seriously doubt that the taxes would be lower.
Another factor to consider is "How much salt exposure has the 2000 MY Vette had during its years on the roads of Michigan?"
I hate to admit that I agree with your future bride, but I think she is right.
Since you will be so close to California and other states that don't have miserable snow ladden winters I am sure you can find plenty of Vettes that would meet your requirements.
Good luck in making this important decision in a way that will not create dissention in your MARRIAGE!

In bold are the two points that first came to mind for me, I would say consider the total cost of buying and transporting then compare it to buying one in NM.
If you can drive it to NM and the trip is a normal "no carrier needed" then don't worry about this obviously. Also, You can get damage to your car even if she's sitting in the garage!! Worrying about a windshield ding or worse is crazier than I am by have my garage Queen sitting in my garage... excess mileage? Give me a break...
Tell her you're the boss and the pants fit YOU, not her!!

He is absolutely right. Buy car in Michigan, based on lower cost.
Ask yourself if this represents a genuine opportunity to get exactly the Vette that you want. If it does, go ahead and buy it now. Life is short and full of unexpected reasons/causes that can prevent you from later accomplishing what it is you want very much do.
I would buy it. Worse case scenario if you find a better vette in N.M. you can always sell yours, probably for a profit and buy something different down there. Isn't yellow Vettes more rare because of the color? Thought I heard that somewhere!

I was thinking the same thing.
A marriage that doesn't start in harmony will certainly end in AGONY!
I have been maried for 38 years and believe me, it takes compromise and understanding for one another's feelings and opinions to keep a good marriage going.
When you ask for advice on this forum you have to remember a couple of things:
1. The answer you get might be worth just what you paid for it.
2. The person giving the advice may be 21 and single or 60 and divorced three or four times. (Have you ever heard the expression, "consider the source!"?
Michigan is, arguably, in the middle of a statewide recession (maybe that's why you are relocating). New Mexico is in a boom time when compared to Michigan. High cost consumer items in economic distress regions will typically be cheaper than in areas of economic growth to foster sales. However, with the internet, it's so easy to price a C5 for sale at a right price that reaches out way beyond where one lives. You may luck into a distress sale in Michigan, keep looking.
To get regional pricing data, use Auto Trader.com and punch in your Michigan zipcode with a 50 or 100 mile radius and model C5 you want. Find out the zip code of where you are going to move to in New Mexico and do the same but put in 300 miles (New Mexico and the SW is less densly populated). Compare the two results and you'll see the realtive costs of the type and year of C5 you're interested in. I'll bet New Mexico C5s will be priced a little higher than Michigan. You can do this for any of the internet buying services.
With the tight credit crunch going on now and you have the money or access to the money, it's a buyers market especially when going to dealers. Cars are not moving now, consumer confidence is low, great time to buy if you have the money!
No matter what you do, make sure you buy. These cars are awesome to own and drive.
