Default "RESERVE FUEL"--how much left?

When this pops up on the "DIC", how much do I have left?

If memory serves me, probably less than 5 gallons...I need to check the manual. I've only let it get that low once.

It never tells you, here is the manual reference:

"When the needle approaches the red zone, RESERVE
FUEL will appear on the Driver Information Center
(DIC) display. When the needle approaches the “E”,
LOW FUEL will appear on the display.
Press RESET to let the vehicle know that you have
acknowledged a DIC message(s). Pressing RESET will
also turn off a DIC message but the LOW FUEL
message will come on again in 1O minutes if you have
not added fuel to the vehicle."

It does say that LOW FUEL comes on when there is less than 50 miles left on FUEL RANGE:

"LOW FUEL (fuel range is less than 50 miles (80 km))"

Default fuel

Reserve fuel comes on at about 3 gal level, low fuel comes on w/ about 45 miles left and on the distance to empty "low range" comes on with about 30 miles left. I don't know about all of them but on my 98 that is very accurate. I have set my trip odometer when low range comes on and run it till it was out of gas, and it was very close to being 30 miles(within 1 mile)

Why would you run your gas tank dry? Trying to burn up your fuel pump?

I seldom get to a 1/4 of a tank even before I put my blower in and now I try to fill up at a 1/2 tank so I for sure keep my fuel pump cool

This is a question I often wondered myself. I always fill up when it shows to "squares" on the HUD, Or when there is 1/4 tank left on the guage.

Techron and similar additives work great but all potentiometers greatly benefit from the wiping action of a pot arm, particularly when a cleaner is used as well. Always avoid running it down in the lower ranges... fine, but when you need to, you might want to say a little prayer that the cleaner alone has worked real good. For that reason I make a point of regularly running it on down when I know I can get gas at any time .

Arent the fuel pumps submerged I thought that eventhough you run out of gas the tank still has a gallon or so in it to keep the fuel pump WET

You probably have about 5 Gallos, but FYI its not good tu run that low because the Fuel Pump gets hot and wears out quicker

Well, On Wednesday night, I got that to come up on the DIC on my coupe. Weird as I thought I had a little over 1/4 tank. One could say the gauge does travel to the left after all

I went to the gas station (probably drove less then 2 miles when that came on the DIC) and the pump clicked off at just a little over 13 gallons of fuel.

I have a 2000 Coupe. So, that would say it's about 5 gallons for my car anyway.

otay, I figgered it up. 1/4 million miles/ ave. 24mpg=10,416.666... fillups most near ever one down ta tha low range display. result? no fuel pump failures

Here's my senario.....Drove about 15 miles after RESERVE FUEL showed up, and then filled up. Took EXACTLY 16 gallons, which would mean I had about 3 gallons left?

Reserve fuel = 2.5-3 gallons. I've hit reserve fuel several times on long trips trying to see how much I can get out of the tank. Every time I filled up at that point it was 15-15.5 gallons to full. 18 gallon tank(s)

The gauge/DIC is not that accurate when the tanks get low. I've had it go reserve fuel, low fuel, then back to quarter tank in less than 10 miles after 3 different stops/starts. I suspect it was the tanks equalizing the amounts.
