I had the CAGS bypass installed at the dealership in my 04 vert. The total cost parts & labor was $75. It is well worth the cost. The 1-4 shift is a pain in the butt.
If you are wondering; the CAGS acronym stands for. Computer Assisted Gearshift Selection.
what is a CAGS adapter and were can you buy it and how much
Almost all of the forum vendors sell them. CAGS = Computer Aided Gear Selection. They are ~$20 and take 5 minutes to install. Just back the car up on a set of ramps and crawl under and click the CAGS in.
Best $20 spent for me, got rid of that da** 1st to 4th. CLB was the next best thing but that is a piece of mind since it works silently under the steering column.

Another case of the dealer ripping off someone. $20 for the eliminator and 2 minutes to install.
I never have to worry about it. Who shifts at such low rpm's anyway? Not me I can tell ya that.
When I first got my car this CAGS thing irritated the hell out of me but that only lasted about a week or two. Now I don't even know it's there. Just shift at a higher rpm and the problem is solved, or at a lower rpm depending on the situation.
just bought a 2001 with 6 speed it jumps from 1 to 4 in moderate acceleration
Congrats!
You absolutely want to do two things.
a) CAGS (Ecklers, Mid America, etc)
b) CLB (column lock bypass - Corvettes of Houston comes to mind) if it hasn't been done yet.
Get the cags. I know all the macho guys tell you to just drive it correctly and it won't be an issue, but there are several low speed, local, traffic situations, etc. where the eliminator comes in extremely handy.
Get it.
Here is a picture of the CAGS eliminator installed in my car...simple, easy install....unplug the connector from the transmission...attach the supplied connector cap....next, take the connector line that you just unplugged and snap on the CAGS eliminator & zip tie it...so it doesn't move around & keep it clear of the exhaust.
