Default OT- Exhaust systems

I just read a closed thread about exhaust systems refering to Harley exhausts. I believe in California motor cycles are not required to have mufflers. I also read somewhere that there are new laws coming out that will require muffled exhausts on bikes, finally! Even back in the 50's you could get a ticket for noise, especially with Smittys. Don't ask me how I know!

Bikes have always required mufflers in CA. It's just that not everyone chooses to follow that law.

Just wait until bikes start requiring smog equipment too... it's coming. Fortunately its not required yet, and when it does it wont be applied to previous models. Honda is one step ahead and has been putting smog equipment on some of their models for a while now. My 03 VFR has O2 sensors and a catalytic converter!

Needless to say, that crap is coming off. If it's not required, I don't want it. There isn't much pollution coming from an engine that runs on regular and gets 45-50mpg anyway.

Where in the hell would you ever get that idea? California has some of the most restrictive laws on bikes and cars in the nation!

New laws coming out that will require muffled exhausts on bikes? Wow, what a concept! Mike, I don't know where you live (profile not filled out) but here in California, every bike sold here in the last 50 years or so has had to have a muffler on it! I believe that is probably true in most states.

Granted, most Harley riders (including myself), ride bikes with modified exhaust. Been getting away with it for over 20 years. Just not a high priority where I live. But they do indeed have mufflers!

Care to give us a little info as to where you got your information?

At the risk of offending all Harley riders...I HATE LOUD PIPES!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are perhaps the most peace disturbing vehicles known to man. I live on what should be a quiet corner lot and it seems not one Harley can have quiet pipes and a considerate driver.Their early Sunday morning day trips/poker run/fundraiser and earlier morning stumble home from the bar always wakes the family up.If every Vette salesman sold the new owner a set of straight pipes with each car, I'd have the same problem with Vettes. No excuse for the noise. The sad thing is that a Harley sounds nice stock.I guess it's a lot easier to make them loud than fast because a Gold wing that sounds like an electric sewing machine runs circles around them.Smoother and more reliable too. Harley owners with loud pipes must be gay and have little dinks.

There is nothing wrong with me... Since you might be simple, this was a JOKE kind of related to the standing joke that all vette owners must be compensating for their lack of physical endowment by owning a flashy vehicle. The loud pipes and glorified cub scout uniforms the Harley riders seem to all wear relates to wanting to be noticed or compensating for their shortcomings.Get it?

I'm actually a great neighbor, come to Michigan and move next door.We will get along great until I crush your loud pipe Harley with my redneck lifted Dodge Ram.

I agree that some Bike really need some exhaust mufflers on them! Especially some of the open drag pipe bikes.

When it pierces my ears I wonder how they can stand it when they are riding?

Ohhh! They are probably deaf by now! I understand!

Thanks,Matt

Since you might be simple, Well I am not a brain, but I am not simple either. At least if you want to joke, throw a or something else in with the statement. Not everyone is thick skinned.

Thanks for the suggestion, I guess my "humor" needs some help. The topic obviously struck a raw nerve with me. I think loud pipes are and I'm sorry if I offended anyone (I don't see a smilie for shame). Chuck.

Loud pipes just friggin suck. It's not so bad when they are just driving by, but the douches that have those bikes roll through parking lots revving them up and deafening people. They are the biggest douche bags on wheels, leagues above ricers and people blasting their crappy sounding sub with the windows down.
