I just got a new job and asked the wife to be able to purchase a mod for my efforts! (Yes I drunk the Mod KoolAid from Jim Jones, yes it's Guana grape. I hope this joke is not in bad taste).
I am deciding between the Jet PCM or Vararam, which will I tell a difference with? I have no other performance modifications.
Have not heard the old jet chip since my 5.0 days. Stay away from the chip. I like the haltech setup but anything will be better than stock.
This is not necessarily good advice. My Brother-in-law and I both use the Jet Chip Module, and it tied our intake and exhaust mods together very effectively.
That being said, get the Vararam first. If you don't live near a good tuner, then get the Module later. The Module does work very well. I for one will swap out the Module one day for a tune at ECS.
The sequence you should consider is
1. Vararam
2. American Racing headers
3. Professional tune
I think four of those was necessary, because really, you only need those 2 mods and you will make some SERIOUS power. An aftermarket "cat back" doesn't really do that much for you, you could go cheap actually and just replace the stock mufflers with something that flows a little better and you'd be in good shape. Stock exhaust is stainless, size is the same and I noticed no difference whatsoever between stock exhaust and the borla other than the sound. Chevy did a good job with the stock exhaust, but the headers/matching x-pipe are a must, you may get away with just the headers, not sure how they fit w/ the stock H-pipe.
Those jet modules may be fine for very lightly modified cars, but pro-tuning is where it is at because it is done for YOUR specific car/application.
That said, enjoy the VR B2 that we all know you will buy and happy modding! PS, don't pay more than maybe $315 for it because most of the sponsers here sell it for that or less. I waited for a Group Purchase and got mine for less than $300 shipped to my door. Except that I thought it was hard to install (sounds like it was just me though as others didn't have as much trouble) Its a wonderful mod, maybe the best designed intake I've ever seen for the cost. I also bought some Z06 screens to go with it to keep birds/squirels/debris out of its path. It will not drink any water either, The water goes right out of it and drains out easily so no worries about hydro-lock.
Get the vararam.
The Jet module is designed to be plugged into your PCM and it does basically the same job as a handheld programmers tune would. After you've done the CAI and exhaust it will actually help you feel a little bit more of a punch, but the module is useless if you plan on doing more.
