This is probably a rerun someplace my in dash CD player works fine but the 12 disc skips. Changed out CD's with other new (Store Bought) with no luck. What's next remove and replace or is there a fix for this p.o.s. Gripes me when ZZ Top is playing "Shes got legs, and kn....
Can't believe nobody else has had a problem with their CD player skipping? ANYONE ?
Here's the deal. If the player skips when you put new store bought CD's in it, then the player is bad. Furthermore, with the cost of players today, it would make absolutely no sense to repair the one you have. Toss it in the garbage and open yourself up to the new technology, including players that not only play CD's, they also play DVD's, MP3's, WMA & WMV files, MPEG and AVI files.
There's a lot to be seen. Get your shopping shoes on.
"I am no technical expert but I will relate my own personal experiences with skipping CD players. This has happened to me several times in the past and in each case it had to do with the tracking mechanism getting dirty and dusty and therefore not gliding smoothly back and forth (the dirt would make the laser "arm" catch as it moved along the mechanism).
In each case, I took my CD player to a repair shop and each time the cost of doing this was about 50% of what I paid for the CD player in the first place. As you might suspect, I am only willing to do this once or twice before I then decide to go out and buy myself a new CD player!
So, this would be my advice: if you are handy with electronics, open up your player and clean the tracking mechanism yourself. Otherwise, you will need to take it to a repair shop. Perhaps labour rates for this type of work are not as high as they are here in Canada, so you will have to determine for yourself if it's worth it to spend the $$$ on the repair or on a new player. It's the same sort of question as with running an old car - do you want to sink your money into continuously maintaining an old vehicle, or put it toward payments on a new one?"
I've never had mine skip, but when I go around a corner too fast (excessive g forces), it will error out, and I have to pull the magazine and let it re-index itself. Then all is well.
All of these "tracking" issues that you all are describing have a lot to do with the read head's distance from the CD. The CD kinda "floats" while playing and the distance of the read laser from the CD has a tight tolerance. If that distance is over-maxed in either direction, you'll get a blank out in sound. If the laser is having trouble reading the CD, you'll get skips. The problem with skips is, it could be a dirty read head or a bad read head. Dirty can be fixed if you know how to take the thing apart and use the correct cleaning cloth and solvent. Bad read heads are not worth fixing today. The way I see it, neither are dirty ones. These players are so cheap now its not worth the time. Plus, newer technology is a lot better at reading than a 7 year old head.
Mine was acting up (wouldn't play some of the 12 cd's I had in it) so I'd have to open the hatch and switch them around to hear some.
Finally, figuring it would cost $$$ to get it fixed, I just went and bought an Ipod, the Ipod 2 car kit, and now can hear 100 CD's without any problem.

This sounds like the way to go. Thanks for everyones input. Since this post I've gotten other issues. Had a dump truck bouncing down a 2 lane country hill towards me and I noticed dust behind and to the sides of him. The dust was rocks. Rt front, Lt turn signal, HUD windshield not cracked but nicks in 4 places. Now the CD player is secondary to say the least. I picked a helluva time to quit drinkin.
