Default CAGS harness failure

Thought I'd post this as a heads up. Saw a deal on eBay (you can see this coming...) and bought a CAGS defeat harness from a vendor in Indianapolis. It appeared to be a brand new one from Mid America Motorworks, but cheaper. Hmmmm? With the help of Mike Mercury (Tim), we installed it a few weeks ago. No problems, CAGS is defeated, all's right with the world. On Thursday I get the dreaded check engine light; trouble code is for the skip shift. Hmmmmm again. Today we got under the car and the harness appeared OK, until one of the wires pulled out. Tim took the thing apart and found this:

The resistor had overheated and melted the soldered connections. When he tested the resistor it measured 2.2 ohms; the online instructions for the DIY version call for a 2200 ohm resistor. Even without being an electrical guru I can spot a problem there. Moral of the story: Lots of questionable stuff on eBay, from bogus memory cards to what appears to be a poorly constructed CAGS harness. No intent to blame Mid America here; not sure this was really their harness.

Thanks for the heads up! I had my CAGS turned off when it was dyno tuned, more full proof.

At least it was something that is easily repaired. Good reminder that you have to be careful when buying from the auction site.

it could still be that you just got a defective one. the resistance of the semi-conductor could have changed when it fried. sorry to hear about your misfortune!

Default My Mid America failed

Bought a Mid America CAGs defeat and it failed within 3 months. Switched to Thunder Racing. CAGs defeat. I also have their CLB. No problems with either.

I just about bought one from that auction site until I did a search on CF. I decided to go with a PFYC (I don't know who makes it) and hope to have good luck with it.

Thanks! The good news is Tim repaired it on the spot, epoxied the new parts in, cleared the trouble code and so far it's working fine.
