Any special tools needed to replace pads and rotor on a 99 vert? got some estimates and the lowest I found was $550 for turned rotors and cheep pads. I don't have the facility anymore so will try to do it out at my storage unit where all my tools are. Any suggestions?
I paid 150 shipped for my brand new rotors of ebay and yes they are stock. The only thing special I remember was a clamp to push the brake shoe piston back in with. BTW I am a weekender.
Got BRAND NEW GM rotors for $22.80 at the GM parts wholesaler. Dealer wantedf $135.00 each for the SAME rotors. Your rear rotors probably do NOT need to be replaced. Mine didn't on my 98 but the front ones had been cut before so I replaced them. Used OEM GM pads. They were about $75 and $55 as I recall and come with the new stainless steel inserts. I needed a LARGE HAMMER to get the rear rotors off. The calipers come off with a small socket wrench, 13 mm I think but the caliper BRACKETS front and rear take a larger socket and A LOT OF FORCE. They are locktited on with 125# of torque. Needed a long breaker bar and 1/2" socket wrench to remove. When you take the rears off ADJUST your parking brake. Should JUST DRAG. Adjust using the starwheels. DO ONE WHEEL AT A TIME. That way you will have a reference if you forget how to put them back on. Also on the rears GM says to unhook the PB cable BEFORE removing the rotors. Don't forget to REINSTALL it when you are finished. When calipers are off its a good time to clean them with brake cleaner and a brush and invest about $12 for the Duplicolor caliper paint. I used red and it looks like the torch red on a Z06. Paint them several times to get good coverage and wait about 30 minutes between coats.
Total job costs Less than $200 and you think your brakes are brand new. Bed the brakes by making several ALMOST stops from say 70 or so down to 20 MPH. This will prevent you having pulsating brakes.
If they later pulsate make some hard stops from 70 to 80 MPH down to 20 MPH but don't stop altogether with your foot on the brakes as this will transfer pad material onto the rotors which causes pulsations in the first place. Have FUN... I took 3 days doing mine and mostly waited for the caliper paint to dry. Should be dry in 24 hours. BIGHANK
