My A/C just stopped working in my '97 C5. When I press the A/C button the light on the button flashes 6 times and then goes off. I ran the codes and found nothing dealing with the A/C. Any ideas?
Do we have auto or manual air? In either case, start the eng, set the AC to it's coldest setting, pop the hood and watch the compressor. If the comp is engaged the entire front pulley will be turning, not just the part the belt rides on but the front plate too. If the comp is not engaged, disconnect the batt cable for a few minutes and check it again. Let us know what you find.
If you outside temp reading is incorrect it will stop the A/C from coming on if the temp is reading lower than the current temp the computer 'thinks it is'..a friend of mine,Larry had this problem on his from time to time...he'd just drive it, (over 45mph for greater than 1 minute) that is when the temps will 'reset' or start correcting themselves...he eventually fixed the problem with a new ambient temp sensor. don't know if this is your problem, but you asked for ideas..

If your compressor isn't engaged, it may be either a fuse, or the condensor sensor. I fixed my friends Ford AC by disconnecting the wire from the sensor and shorting the two connections in the wire. The compressor engaged when I did this. Do not run it more than 20 seconds this way becuse it may cause damage. His sensor cost about $45 at the dealership. This is all Shade Tree Mechanic, so If you're not feeling lucky, just take it to the dealership. It should only take them 5 minutes to make the same evaluation of the problem and about 10 minutes to change out the sensor and ring up your bill. They may charge you the book time which may be an hour or more, I don't know. If it isn't the sensor, then it could be the freeon, compressor pump or something more esoteric. This will of course take more time and money to fix. This is the second AC I'v fixed like this though.
