A clearance... I've got one of those, but probably not good enough for that place. Or maybe just need clearance for takeoff?

Area 51 would be a great test spot but the results would be kept top secret.
Motortrend had a great article about published verse actual speeds in their October 2007 issue. Plus some really great pics of Danica Patrick.

Default Top Speed

Motor Tend claims that the new 2008 C6Z51 with 436 hp will hit a top speed of 190. Motor Tend has a video of a stock C6Z06 hitting 200 on a 3 mile air force base run way, so i think the C5Z06 should be close to the 190's. C5Z06 is a lighter car than the C6Z51.

Default Where To Let Cars Run

One place is an Open Road Race event:
www.openroadracing.com

The down side is it will take you a minimum of 4 races to get a chance to run full out. And you have to have a car set up ie cage, fuel cell, fire supression system.
the upside these events are a kick in the a$$ and a great group of people that do it.

Default How much HP for 200

My Open road car is right at 600 rwhp and top speed is 206mph so far. With everything perfect maybe a 208-210mph is possible. Now I do run a fair bit of downforce with the wing and air dam so that is hurting top speed some, but at 200 I like the car to feel solid. Not jumping white line to white line. Been there done that and it sucks.

the c6z51 is drag limited top speed, the c5z is gearing limited to about 175. This is fact, you can't go faster than redline in 5th.

Yes but with more power, top speed will be achieved in 6th gear.

In theory maybe but in real life, no. I have heard many times that 6th gear can not physically handle it. You can have the power but from what I understand 6th gear is to small to handle the pressure of a top speed run. Unless somebody can prove otherwise? I'm all ears.

it's gonna take WAY MORE than 436 hp to pull 190 in sixth gear on a c5z.

True, I'm not comparing the C5 and C6. I'm only saying that with enough power under the hood, 6th gear in any C5 will become quite usable. Adding +100hp should make a nice gain. Keep loading it up with 100 more here and 100 more there, and then you're making sick videos like JBSBLOWNC5 chasing down Busas. He has extensive video documentation of easily blasting near 200mph. Lingenfelter's 650hp car is rated for 226+ mph in a coupe! I don't understand why anyone doubts that speed. One thing for sure, you gotta have large kahunas to go do it! That open road racing looks AWESOME!!!

Beat me to it. And if that car doesn't have enough to pull 6th it ain't gonna happen.

change the fifth to the c5 coupe ratio and be done with it, the average to mentally insane don't run their cars over 200 mph. Anyone running a street car much over 200 mph goes into a new level of crazy.

ZO6Electron,
I resemble that remark. Having 2 200+ cars. Only one is street driven though.

no no, a street car, not a purpose built car. I would be nervous without a full cage, more safety equipment, helmet, fire extinguisher, and any other safety equipment possible.

I doubt you drive much over 200 mph in a car without all that safety equipment. I wouldn't.

I've got another 60 more HP then I did when I shot this vid, but at around 700 RWHP, witha 373 Quaife diff, and a built M6 with lower G-force 5th and 6th, hitting 200 is just a matter of overcoming the fear that makes you lift...

Man, that thing rips. Very fun to watch...

It looks like 6th gear holds up fine. In Joels setup, the gearing makes 6th gear wind out quick and top out at 200mph. I imagine that stock ratio gearing would wind up slower, but top out higher. It would likely take me 4 miles of road to even find out! It might be worth going to Nevada to try it, and get kicked out.

Hey Jeffy, what's your setup (tranny/rear) for running 200+?

ok so I don't understand rear gear ratios. All I hear is talk but I don't know what it means. 2.73, 3.10. whats stock in a 03 z06?

Z06electron said put in a c6 5th and 6th(for preferred gas mileage hehe)

Also, the lingenfelter had 2.73 ratio in rear end. Can you mate the 2 c6 5th and a 2.73 gear to faster or are the 2 mutually exclusive and have nothing to do with each other?

Could someone just break down the rear gears and why they would be changed? I intend of having a comfortable vette, is 2.73 or 3.10 a matter when it comes to drivability. I ask because a friend of mine has hard freaking shocks that make my head hurt when riding around town. I know the point is to keep wheel hop down/power to the ground, but its painful, and I expect a vette to be better than that. So can changing the rear gears affect the ride that bad also?

...on second thought maybe I'll read a couple of books or something, that's probably covered in about a couple hundred pages and I'm looking for cliff notes I only ask cuz I trust the ppl weighing in on the subject.

p.s. someone should specialize in Z06electron's suggested tranny rebuild and make the c5's around the country better than the boxy they call a c6 IMHO

I'll be watching replies for sho'
