Might of picked up some trash bags or other debris along the way to Laughlin. Also it is the middle of the desert so cars do run a little hotter when it's like 115 or so. Wait til it cools off maybe around 2 a.m. and see if it still heats up. I have a Pro Charger on mine and when it warms up around here (So Cal ) I have to watch the coolant temps pretty close. Just my .02.

Coolant level: OK
Fans: ON
Thermo open: Check
Sounds like there is definately something restrictring airflow on the radiator, or he's blown a gasket. Any coolant on the dipstick? I'd look toward the radiator being blocked with junk first. Good luck!
I blow mine out atleast every oil change as it is on the lift and I get lots of crap in mine. If this is not the issue, and his coolant is ok, time for a flush or a DeWitts like I run
FWIW Home Depot sells a dryer lint brush....long and thin..allows you to run the brush down both sides of the radiator in addition to blowing it out..I have also used the foaming AC cleaner with good results.
I installed a Dewitts recently as well since my Maggie was causing hi temps with the AC on....it definetly helps but I think I may have to do more when I get the AC back up and running 100%. I have considered some type of additional underhood fan.
