GPS Recommendations - please
Hi Guys
We're planning a 12 day trip to Bowling Green and thought it might be a good idea to get one of these . I haven't got a clue on these - any recommendations or suggestions on what to look for are appreciated
You can't go wrong with Garmin. I have a Garmin Nuvi 350 and love it. Look for one that has bluetooth for hands free calling. Shop at PCNation for some of the best prices. Good luck!
Other GPS units can be purchased for less $ - it all depends on what you need (I.e., BlueTooth, portable, etc.) Do a Goggle search for GPS and take your pick.
I bought a Garmin for my girlfriend, works great. After 4 months the dash got really hot during one of those record breaking heat days and the unit fell. The screen went out, but the voice portion still worked. We contacted Garmin, shipped it and they returned it completely fixed 7 days later, all under warranty. At my work we have Garmin, TomTom's, Magellans, JVC....Get a Garmin, the TomToms are always being returned.
^^^^^I got the one Dennis has based I like the larger screen and the bluetooth capabilities, with it being portable and I am on the phone I just take it with me until I finish the call very nice and works well in my Truck for the bluetooth, but not in the Vette, mine is to loud

i have one of the Magellan RoadMate series.....800 i think.....i'm very pleased with it and have had no issues......its very easy to use with touchscreen and audible turns.......very sturdy bracket with suction to the windshield.......easily removed from car when not in use.....i do know that Magellan is due out with updated maps for the older models, so i would make sure a new unit (whether Garmin or Magellan) has the updated maps already installed........otherwise ur maps could be a couple of years old already and have to spend another hundred or so just to get updates......
We've got a Garmin 660 and really like it.
Mounts nicely in the 'vette with the ProClip (www.proclipusa.com) mounting system like AC54ME shows in his photo holding his iPod.
I have a Magellan Meridian Color, which is a handheld unit, but it also came with car mounting equipment. My uncle has a Garmin.
My thoughts: Magellan pulls a signal better. Take the Garmin off the dash and lose the signal. Magellan works inside the car under the roof. I don't know if the software is different for the units dedicated specifically for cars, but my Magellan software SUCKS as far as directions, etc. Very user unfriendly.
And as a whole, Magellan tech support DOUBLE SUCKS!! It's in India, and they don't know what the hell they are doing. Every time you call you get a different answer. Terrible.
So if I was buying one now, my tendency would be to stay away from Magellan for that reason, but be aware of the signal issue, and see if they have a good return policy.
I have the Magellan 800...I think lol ...and it works great....in the vette I don't use the suction cup on the glass, if my wife is with me I just sit it between the grab handle and the dash, stays great and works great too. Only drawback to me is whoever designed it seemed to think that it was a good idea to have the sound come out of the back of the unit. Forget about hearing anything if you have the top down, mine is a vert.
